SÖDERTÄLJE CANAL 

GENERAL INFORMATION

VHF-WATCH
VHF-channel 68.

REPORTING
VHF Ch 68 should be used for contact with Södertälje Canal.
Call signal: SÖDERTÄLJE CANAL
Vessels should report at the following positions:

NORTHBOUND
• Reporting point No. 22 - 'Fläsklösa'
• When passing bridges 'Södra kanalbroarna'
• Call VTS Södertälje on Ch 68 before leaving the lock

SOUTHBOUND
• Reporting point No. 23 - Light 'Bornhuvud'
• When passing 'Sällskapsholmen'
• Call VTS Södertälje on Ch 68 before leaving the lock

VISIBILITY
The canal is closed for all traffic (except for pleasure craft)
when visibility is less than 400 metres.

LOCK
The Lock Master advices vessels on priority order, assigns a
position inside the lock chamber and gives clearance to enter.

TRAFFIC AND BRIDGE SIGNALS
Location of signals are marked on the chart by SS.

LINASUNDET SOUTHBOUND / NORTHBOUND
Signals on the N part of 'Slottsholmen' / NW of island 'Limpan':
2 Iso R 3s            All traffic – Stop
Iso W 3s              All traffic – Proceed

NORRA KANALEN SOUTHBOUND
Signals on the control tower of bridge 'Mälarbron', N side:
2 Iso R 3s            All traffic – Stop
Iso W 3s              All traffic – Proceed

MÄLARBRON (Double bascule bridge)
The bridge is remote-controlled from the lock.
Request opening by VHF:
SOUTHBOUND            When passing 'Sällskapsholmen'
NORTHBOUND            When inside the lock
Iso R 3s              Bridge is closed or is closing
Iso R + Iso W 3s      Signal from vessel acknowledged
Iso W 3s + FW         Bridge is being opened
Iso G 3s              Bridge is open
F R                   Bridge cannot be opened

LOCK AND BRIDGE 'SLUSSBRON'
Iso R 3s              Stop. Lock and bridge are closed
Iso R + Iso W 3s      Lock is about to be opened
Iso G 3s              Lock and bridge are open – Proceed
Signals situated at the four corners of the lock:
F G                   Vessels are clear to leave the lock
Information boards for urgent messages to vessels and pleasure
crafts are found by the jetties on both sides of the lock.

BRIDGES 'SÖDRA KANALBROARNA'
Iso R 3s              Bridges are closed
Iso R 3s + Iso W 3s   Signal from vessel acknowledged
Iso R 3s + FW         Bridges are being opened
Iso G 3s              Bridges are open – vertical clearance 30 m
2 Iso G 3s            Bridges are open – vertical clearance 35 m
3 Iso G 3s            Bridges are open – vertical clearance 42 m
F R                   Bridges cannot be opened

SÖDRA KANALEN SOUTHBOUND / NORTHBOUND
Signals are located on the W side of the N entrance to 'Södra
kanalen', on the pier at the E side of the S entrance to 'Södra
kanalen' and 350 m ESE of the canal entrance in 'Igelstaviken'
2 Iso R 3s            All traffic - Stop
Iso W 3s              All traffic - Proceed
