It is declared a Protected Natural Area, with the character of Area of Protection of Flora and Fauna, the zone known as Islands of the Gulf of California, in the states of Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sonora and Sinaloa. The area is made up of 898 islands. It is worth noting that due to the large number of islands located within the area, the total zoning scheme will be carried out through future consultation processes. Therefore, the Decree establishing the natural protected areas lists only 30 islands considered as protection zones. These areas are considered to be fragile and sensitive environmental systems, for which reason the general public must abide by the provisions of the respective Management Program and the provisions contained in the Decree published on June 7th, 2000 in the Official Gazette of the Federation.
