It is declared a Protected Natural Area, with the character of National Park, the area known as West Coast of Mujeres Island, Cancun and Nizuc Point, located in the municipality of Mujeres Island and Benito Juarez, in the state of Quintana Roo. The area is integrated by three polygons corresponding to the buffer zone; Polygon 1 West Coast of Mujeres Island, is characterized by four reef units called La Cadenita, El Farito, Manchones Chico and Manchones Grande; Polygon 2 Cancun Point, which includes seven reef units named La Bandera, Chitales Chico, Chitales Grande, Cuevones Chico, Cuevones Grande, Aristos Platform Reef and Grampin Platform Reef; and Polygon 3 Nizuc Ponit which includes four reef units, known as First Barrier, Second Barrier, Third Barrier and El Bajito.
These areas are considered fragile and sensitive environmental systems, therefore the general public must abide by the provisions of the respective Management Program and the provisions contained in the Decree published on june 7th, 2000 in the Official Gazette of the Federation.
