	Rangat Bay has a population of about 3000 in 2005. The major part of population is Hindus, Christians and Muslims. Fishing, agriculture (Rice, coconut) are the main occupation of the people. Principle languages are Hindi, 
	Tamil, Bengali, Telugu, and Malayalam.All food Provisions and vegetables come directly from Chennai or via Port Blair.

1a	The breakwater at Rangat Bay is fitted with street lights along the entire length. It appears as a 'string of white light' a few miles from sea at night.

	Rangat Bay is entered between Coxon Point (12º29'.2 N, 92º57’.95E), which is bold and bluff and John’s Point (12º28'.3N, 92º57’.6E) about 1 miles SSW. A rocky patch, which dries 1.2m, lies about ¾ mile ENE of Coxon Point, 
	and shoals at the outer most of which has least depth of 5.8m, extend about 2¼ miles E from the point. There are depths of 3.9m between the patch of rock and a position 1 mile ESE of Coxon Point. John’s Point also bold and 
	bluff, is fairly steep to, except on its SE side where a reef, the outer end of which dries 1.2m, extends ½ mile SE.

	A Concrete Jetty, with a conspicuous white structure housing passenger and cargo transit sheds on it, extends SW into the bay. The jetty, 70m long has depth of 3.3 to 5m along its outer side. A metalloid road connects Rangat 
	Bay jetty with the towns of Rangat and Mayabandar.
	
Anchorage:

	Anchorage may be obtained at the entrance between John’s point and Coxon point.  Adequate shelter is available if anchored 2-3 cables from the breakwater. Anchoring at night must be done with great caution due to 
	non-availability of lights and beacons.  Radar is a must while anchoring at night and poor visibility.  Additional constraint is posed during night from bright background light of Rangat Power Plant. Port Signal station 
	(White square mansion tower, red vertical bands) is conspicuous and brightly illuminated during nights.  The inter island ferries generally keep well clear of the breakwater to make a good approach towards Rangat jetty.  
	The tidal stream is not very effective and the range of tide is not more than 1.5m during any period of the year.
  
	The Port Signal Station painted red and white vertical bands is a square masonry tower located close to the jetty is the only prominent navigation mark. An iron lattice mast on top of the Port Signal Station is also visual.  
	The Port Signal Station is manned during daylight hours only.

Facilities:

	There are no port facilities such as pilot, tugs, workboat, fresh water and fuel supply.  Mostly inter island vessels have been observed to call at Rangat regularly. Shallow draught vessels of up to 4 m can safely berth 
	alongside towards the deeper side.  The breakwater light (White metal column, red bands) (10 m in height) exhibits on the SW arm of the breakwater.


Medical Facility:

	A Primary Health Center is located 8 km from Rangat Jetty.  Ambulance is available 24 hours to meet any emergency medical assistance.

Shipping:

 	Passenger Ferry from Rangat Bay to Port Blair is available 3 times a week via Long Island, Neil Island and Havelock Island. Cement, Construction materials, food provisions, sand, concrete, Diesel are supplied from 
	Chennai, Kolkata and Port Blair by Cargo ships and boats.

Transport:

	 Daily State transport and Private Bus services are available for Port Blair, Mayabandar and Diglipur between 0400 hours till 1900 hours.
