Chart 3024 - Kalingapatnam Anchorage 2.168 Kalingapatnam is an open roadstead port; the town with a population of 17000 in 2004 close to S of the mouth of Vamsadhara River (18º 21'N, 84º 08'E), which is encumbered by sand banks and is not navigable. The port is protected by Sandy Point 2 miles S of the river mouth, and by a spit extending from the point. The substantial coastal and foreign trade once enjoyed by the port has almost ceased since 1951.The town was formerly capital of the Kalinga Dynasty; signs of its former greatness are still visible in the ruins of large buildings and in ancient coins, often found after heavy rains. The port is not visited by any ship, and no cargo movement takes place. Kalingapatnam New Light House.(18º 20'.4 N, 84º 07'.65 E) A light is exhibited from a 31m high white hexagonal masonry tower with red bands in the village 5 cables W of Vamsadhara River mouth. Kalingapatnam Old Light (18º 19'.0N, 84º 07'.65E) Kalingapatnam Old Light house is disused. However, it can be used as a fixing object during day time. There is no facility for exhibiting storm signals as port is non-operational. The Land near Kalingapatnam is low and flat but locality may be identified by Salihundam, an isolated ridge 125m high, running E and W, with its summit near the W end about 5½ miles from the town. This ridge is prominent, bare and wedge shaped with two white temples and a tree on its E slopes. A low range of rugged, rocky hills rises about 4 miles NE of Salihundam. 2.170 Satara Reef, A sunken reef which extends 7 Cables NE from sandy point. The reef has several patches of shallow depths. An obstruction with the depth of 6.4m, which position is approximate, lie 1 mile E of Kalingapatnam Light. Anchorage 2.171 Anchorage may be obtained in a depth of about 8m as shown on the plan (3024) with the Kalingapatnam New Light house bearing 280° distance 8 cables.
