2693- TANGA PORT

	Position.
	The port of Tanga (05°02'.90S 39°07'.60E) lies on the S side of Tanga Bay is the principal city in the N part of Tanzania.

	Function.
	Tanga is the second principal port of Tanzania. Main imports are raw materials, machinery and parts, bulk wheat, cotton and 
	fabrics, fertilizers, paper and paper products, coal, motor vehicles and chemicals. Main exports are cement, copper, sisal coffee, 
	other agricultural products.

	Topography.
	Amboni Hills rise from low and flat land about miles NW of Ras Kazone and serve to Identify Tanga Bay on closer approach. This range 
	is densely wooded and presents no clearly defined summits.
	The numerous islands off the approaches to Tanga are low and densely wooded, and are generally difficult to distinguish from mainland
	Toten Island (Tanga Island) (05°03'.33S 39°06'.45E) in the S part of Tanga Bay opposite Tanga, is covered with dense bush. The island 
	is fringed by mangrove swamps from which a bank of coral and mud.

	Current.
	In Pemba Channel the current is predominantly N going, its direction in mid channel varying from NNW in the S part through N to NNE at
	 Its N end. The rate varies with the monsoons attaining up to 4 knots during the SE monsoon and up to 3 knots during the NE monsoon. 
	When at its maximum rate the current frequently causes ripples, which near the W coast of Pemba, resemble breakers.

	Tidal Streams.
	In the S part of the channel the effect of the tidal stream on the current has not been ascertained, but the constant N going Current 
	is never overcome. In the N part of the channel, however, near the coast of Pemba, the S going tidal stream of the rising tide neutralizes
	 and at times overcomes the constant N going current while the N going tidal stream of the falling tide increase it.

	Controlling depth.
	Least charted depth is 17.7 m within 1 cable of the leading line in Ship Channel

	Pilotage.
	Pilotage is compulsory for vessels entering Tanga Bay and is available during daylight hours only. 

	Harbour.
	The port of Tanga is a lighterage port with two shallow water berths, a multipurpose jetty and 12 anchorage berths for ocean going vessels.

	It is reported that aids to navigation may be unreliable.  

	Navigational aids.
	The alignment (266°)of Ras kazone leading lights leads towards Tanga bay, passing S of an isolated depth of 11 m.

	For entry to Tanga Bay it is recommended to remain on the N side of the ras Kazone leading lights line in order to avoid the shallow depths
	 at its inner end and keep clear of Kwawa Reefs.
	Then alignment(235°) of Toten Island leading lights, route leads initially SW then alignment(204°) of  leading lights, route leads  SSW to 
	round Ras Kazone and enter the Inner Harbour.

	Anchorage
	Vessels can anchor at Tanga Bay entered between Ras Kazone and Kwawa Reef, 5 cables SSW, in depths from 15m to 18 m.
