CHART NO 2524 PORT OF ZANZIBAR General Information Position 8.105 1 Zanzibar Harbour (6°08’.90S, 39°11'.00E) fronts the head town of Zanzibar,also known as Unguja,Mjini,which lies on the W coast of the Unguja, commonly known as Zanzibar(1.73). Zanzibar Harbour is the only port of significance on the island of Zanzibar.Exports are primarilyliy agricultural goods including cloves, coconut oil and copra;imports includes foodstuffs ,building materials and hardware.In 1988 population was 157000. Topography 8.106 1 The town of Zanzibar has two parts which used to be separated by Darajani Creek, Stone Town to the W and Ng’ambo to the E.The dazzling white buildings of the town are visible from a considerable distance. The coast S of the harbour, between Ras Mbwemi,3 miles N,is low,but close to the latter point are some red cliffs which, owing to their brighter colour,are more remarkable than those SE of Ras Buyu.For about 1mile N of Ras Mbwemi there are some white cliffs,from 18 to 24m high. Caution.It is difficult to identify any feature on this part of the coast against the sun in the morning. The coast of N of the harbour ,Ras Uso wa Mambe (5°53’.94S, 39°11'.36E) and a point of 6miles S,consists of sandy bays and beaches with low rockey cliffs backed by gradually rising and thickly wooded land. Approach and entry 8.107 1 Approach is from either N or S through Zanzibar Channel(8.10).Entry through the chain of reefs fronting the harbor is possible through five different channels, although only southern pass (6°16’.00S, 39°09'.00E) from S and English Pass (6°07’.00S, 39°12'.00E) from N are marked and recommended. Limiting conditions Controlling depth 8.109 1 Positions given from Ras Shangani (6°09’.81S, 39°11'.15E): Southern Pass,11.0m(3 1/4 miles S) French pass, 7.6 m (2 3/4 miles NNW) English Pass,11.3 m on the leading line(2 1/2 miles NNE). Deepest and longest berth 8.110 1 Anchorage. Deepest designated berth is No 5(8.133). Alongside. Deepest and longest berth is W side of Malindi Wharf (8.133) Tidal levels 8.111 1 Mean spring range about 3.7 m; mean neap range about 1.2 m. For further details see Admiralty Tide Tables. Density of water 8.112 1 The densitly of the water is 1.025 g/cm3. Maximum size of vessel handled 8.113 1 Largest vessel reported ,length 200 m,draught 10.0 m. Arrival Information Port operations 8.114 1 It is recommended that arrival and departure are between 0600 and 1800. Notice of ETA required 8.115 1 ETA should be sent 24 hours prior to arrival. See admiralty List of Radio Signals Volume 6(3). Prohibited anchorage 8.116 1 Anchoring is prohibited in the fairways and in an area W of Ras Shangani (6°09'.81S, 39°11'.15E) due to the presence of disused cables. The limits of the area, which are shown on the chart, are marked by two white masonry pillars standing on the seawall in front of a building close to the extremity of Ras Shangani, and by a flagstaff (black square slatted topmark) on the roof of the same building; the N and S marks in line with the flagstaff bear 111° and 066°respectively,but these alignments should not be relied on for the adjustement of compasses. Submarine cables 8.117 1 several disused submarine cables exist in Western Pass and Great Pass; anchoring should be avoided in those areas. Pilotage 8.118 1 Pilotage is compulsory. The pilot boards vessels from S 5 cables WNW of Mtwana,in position 6°13'.55S, 39°10'.26E, and from N 5 cables NNE of Seagull shoal, in position 6°04'.63S, 39°11'.58E.See Admiralty List of Radio Signals 6(3). Tugs 8.119 1 It is reported(1998) that tugs are not available. Quarantine 8.120 1 Anchorage for quarantine is in French Pass, either NE or SE of Changuu Island(6°07'.00S, 39°10'.10E)(8.129) depending on the monsoon. Harbour General layout 8.121 1 Zanzibar is primarily a literage port, with anchorage available in the roadside post NW and SW of the town.Malindi Warf, 6 Cables NE of Ras Shangani, provides limited alongside berthing. Dhow Harbour, on the NE side of Malindi Wharf,and entered between the N end of the wharf and Malindi Breakwater, 1 ½ cables N, accommodates smaller vessels of shallow draught . Natural conditions 8.123 1 Tidal streams within Zanzibar Harbour are weak. Directions for entering harbour (continued from 8.76) Principal marks 8.50 1 Landmarks: Radio mast (red lights) (6°09'.95S, 39°11'.60E). Clock tower (Government building) (6°09'.65S,39°11'.37E). Clock tower (6°07'.20S,39°12'.71E). . 2 Kibweni Palace (white building gredroof,surmounted by a flagstaff)(6°06'.75S,39°12'.79E),the most conspicuous mark on the N approach to Zanzibar Harbour. White house (5°59'.61S,39°11'.13E) . 3 Major lights: Chumbe light (6°16'.80S,39°10'.62E) (8.74) Zanzibar Shangani Lights (6°09'.65S,39°11'.37E) (8.99). Entrance channels 8.125 1 The entrance channels to Zanzibar Harbour, though narrow, are not dangerous; both main channels, Southern Pass(8.126) and English Pass(8.128), have a width of about 2 cables at their narrowest point. Southern Pass 8.126 1 See caution at 8.106 From a position of SW of Ariandne Bank (6°20'.5S,39°10'.4E) the track leads generally N towards the alignment of Kiungani Leading Lights,passing (with positions from Chumbe light (6°16'.80S,39°10'.62E)): W of Ariadne Bank(8.76),and: E of Boribu(6 1/6 miles SW) (8.77), thence: To a position E of Tambare(6 miles WSW)(8.77). 2 Kiungani Leading Lights: Front light (white square metal framework tower, black stripe;14m in height)(6°11'.33S,39°11'.98E). Rear light (white beacon,13m in height)(5 ½ cables NNE of the front light). The alignment (033°) of these lights leads through Sourten Pass, passing: SE of Pwakuu Patch (41/2 miles WNW)(8.100),thence: 3 NW of Chumbe island, small and wooded; Chumbe Light(8.74) is exhibited from the W side of the island.Thence: SE of Nyange (3 miles NW),an extensive drying reef; a drying sandbank lies on the N part of the reef. Thence: NW of a depth of 5.8 m (2 miles N) forming the S extremity of the Mtwana group of shoals,thence: 4 Thence the track continues on the alignment(033°)of Kiungani Leading Lights,passing: Close NW of a light buoy(starboard hand)(3 ½ miles N)moored about 2 cables NNW of the W-most of the Mtwana group of shoals.Caution.a depth of 5.9 miles close SE of the light buoy and care is necessary to avoid being set S of the leading line in this vicinity; a patch with a depth of 1.2 m lies 6 cables ENE of the light buoy. Thence: 5 ESE of a buoy (port hand)(4 miles N)moored 5 cables SSE of the drying reef of Kisiki.A depth of 8.1 m, 5 cables SSW of the buoy,IS THE S extremity of a shoal spit extending S from Kisiki. 8.127 1 Thence the track leads N,passing(with positions from Ras Shangani (6°09'.81S,39°11'.15E)): E of Kisiki, and: W of Ras Mbweni(2 ½ miles SSE)(8.106);the English Mission,2 ½ cables S of the point, is a prominent landmark except against the sun in the morning .Thence: 2 Thence the track leads NNW,passing: Clear of patche with depts of 10.9m(1 ¼ miles SSW),and: ENE of Pange (2 miles SW),a reef on which there is a large sandbank which dries. Between Pange and the shoal ground extending NNW from Kisiki, coral heads with depts of 0.6 m leave narrow channels of deep water between them through which small craft may find passage, but local knowledge is required. Thence. 3 ENE of shoal ground (1 ½ miles WSW)with a least charted depth of 2.7 m which extends 5 ½ cables N from Pange ,thence. WSW of Ras Shangani,a sandy promontory within which stands the town of Zanzibar,and: 4 ENE of Fungu Chawamba(2 ¼ miles WSW),a drying reef,steep-to and can generally be identified,thence: As required for anchorage,taking care to avoid the area of disused submarine cables(8.116),or for alongside berth. Useful marks: 5 The state house (white building, red roof,castellated tower and flagstaff at its S end) (6°10'.05S,39°11'.34E),prominent from S. Water tower (6°10'.09S,39°11'.33E) Two spires (6°09'.77S,39°11'.33E) English Pass 8.128 1 From a position about 2 miles W of Mangapwani Light(5°57'.33S,39°10'.92E)(8.102),the track leads SSE,passing(with position from the light): ENE of Yamba Ngome REEFS(4 miles SW)(8.101),thence: ENE of Fawatu (7 miles SW)(8.101),thence: 2 Maruhubi Palace Gardens Leading Lights: Front light(white pyramidal stone tower,6 m in height)( (6°08'.44S,39°12'.56E). Rear light(white framework tower on white square stone tower,13m in height)(2 cables SSE of the front light, and close NE of the ruins of Maruhubi Palace). 3 The alignment(168°)of these lights leads into the entrance of English Pass, passing(with positions from the front light): ENE of Jiddawi Shoal (5 ¼ milesNNW),a coral pinnacle which is very difficult to see, even from a high vantage position, and care is necessary to avoid it. Clear water also lies W of the shoal. Thence. WSW of charted wreck, depth 9m,(4 ½ miles NNW)which lies 1 cable E of the track. Thence. To the pilot boarding place (4 miles NNW)(8.118). 4 Thence the track continues on the alignment(168°) of the leading light, passing: ENE of Seagull Shoal(3 ½ miles NNW),a small shoal of black sand and coral, reported(2002)as being marked by a buoy;clearing marks for Seagull Shoal are given at 8.129.Thence: 5 ENE of shoal ground(1 ¾ miles NNW)extending N from Chapwani Island. The island is low, bush-covered, and not easily distinguished from N owing to the higher land near the town of Zanzibar behind. There is a British cemetery on the island. Thence: 6 WSW of shoal ground(1 ½ miles N)extending 2 cables NW from Beit el Ras, a low rocky point, thence: E of a light buoy (starboard hand)(6 ½ cables NNW),marking the edge of the below-water reef extending E OF Chapwani Island. 7 Leading Lights.The alighnment (042°),astern, of the leading lights 3 ½ cables SSE of Beit el Ras leads SW towards the berths in Zanzibar harbour: Front light(beacon, 6 m in height)( (6°07'.41S,39°12'.82E). Rear light(beacon, 6m in height)(1 ¼ cables NE of the front light), obscured when bearing more than 085°. 8.129 1 Clearing marks for Seagull Shoal: The alignment (about 180°)of the clock tower(6°09'.65S,39°11'.37E)(8.124) in Zanzibar town with the NW end of Chapwani Island, 2 ½ miles N, passes close E of Seagull Shoal,2 ½ miles father N. See 8.128 for comment about the ease of distinguishing Chapwani Island. 2 Useful marks Quarantine and Isolation Station(6°07'.21S,39°10'.11E) on the N side of Changuu,an island 6 m high surrounded by a drying reef; there are other Government buildings and a flagstaff near the E end of the island. these landmarks can be seen from N. 3 Livingstone house()three storey building, brown pointed roof (6°09'.49S,39°12'.15E);a more prominent building(white, red roof), not charted, stand close NE. Two spires(6°09'.77S,39°11'.33E). Western Pass (continued from 8.100) 8.130 1 Caution .The channel is not marked and its use is not advised unless there is a favorable light for distinguishing the banks and dangers. Track. From a position about 2 miles W of the tower on Bawi Island (6°09'.14S,39°07'.65E) the track leads SE, passing (with positions from the tower): NE of Fungu Mapape(2 ¾ miles WSW)(8.100)thence: SW of the drying reef(1 mile SW)surrounding Bawi Island(8.101). 2 Thence the track leads E,passing: S of the drying reef surrounding Bawi Island,and: N of Murogo (1 ¾ miles S),on which there is a large sand bank which dries and which can generally beidentified.The wide deep channels to W of Murogo can be navigated by eye with safety. Thence the track leads NE’passing: SE of drying reef surrounding Bawi Island,and: Clear of a 9.4 m depth (1 ¼ miles SE), 4 ½ cables NW of Fungu Chawamba(8.127), thence: 3 NW of several detached coral patches,two of which(1 ½ and 1 ¼ miles ESE)are almost awash in places. Thence,whenclear of the N-most of the detached coral patches with a depth of 5.5 m(1 ¼ miles E),the track leads ESE,passing: SSW of a shoal spit (2 miles E)extending S from Changuu Island (8.129),thence: As required for berthing or anchorage. Great Pass 8.130 1 Great Pass, the W- most of the three channels leading into Zanzibar Harbour from N, lies between the drying reef surrounding Changuu Island (6°07'.20S,39°10'.00E)(8.129) and Danzi, 1 ¾ miles NW, a small drying reef. Though it is the widest of the cannels, it is not buoyed and there are no leading marks. French Pass 8.131 1 French Pass lies between Changuu Island (6°07'.20S,39°10'.00E)(8.129) and the drying reef surrounding the small island of Kibandiko, 8cables E. there is least depth of 7.6m in the fairway, but it is constricted to a width of less than 1 cable by the foul ground extending from the reefs on each side. The channel is not recommended as there are no satisfactory leading marks. Berths Anchorage berths 8.133 1 The harbour affords good anchorage in all weathers to vessels up to 335 m long and 9.7 m draught . Anchorage may be obtained in depths from 13 to 22 m in any position N or S of Ras Shangani(6°09'.81S,39°11'.15E), except within the prohibited anchorage (8.116) or in the fairway. Large vessels should anchor in the outer part and small vessels closer inshore. 2 Anchorage berths 1 to 5, N of Ras Shangani,are allotted to vessels greater than 90m in length in either monsoon. A wreck, depth9.4 m lies ½ cable ENE of No1 Anchorage berth. An anchorage for local craft extends over a frontage of about 8 cables of the drying area of Malindi Spit(6°09'.00S,39°11'.80E),as shown on the chart; the offshore limits of the anchorage are marked by a special buoy. Alongside berths 8.134 1 Malindi Wharf (6°09'.27S,39°11'.50E) Wside has a length of 242m; in 2002 there were least depths alongside of accommodate vessels of 10 000dwt. A pontoon used by smaller vessels occupies the S-most 40 m of the berth. Malindi Wharf N side has a length of 114m and is reported(1993) to have a maintained depth of 5.4 m. Port services Repairs 8.135 1 Minor repairs can be undertaken. There are four patent slips for lighter and small craft. The largest patent slip has a length of 72 m(extreme) 18 m (cradle);breadth 5.5 m between cradle dolphins; maximum depth over blocks 1.8 m (forward), 2.3 m (aft);and a lifting power of 50 tons. Other facilities 8.136 1 Hospital; deratting exemption certificates issued; no oily waste reception facilities. Supplies 8.137 1 Fresh water is available at the main wharf, although reported (1998) to be unreliable, and by water boat to vessels at the anchorage; fresh provision s are plentiful except between December and April. Communications 8.67 1 Airport 6 km SSE of the town.
