Vizhinjam 2111 General information 1 Position and function. Vizhinjam harbour (08°22'.62N, 76°59'.39E) “the port of future” located at 15 km S from Trivandrum (Capital of Kerala), on the west coast of India. Being a modern fishing harbour, the principal activity of the port is export/import of fishing products. The port is also capable of break bulk cargo. 2 Port Limits. Mean spring range about 1.2 m; mean neap range about 0.2 m. For more information see Indian Tide Table. 2 Traffic.About 50 vessels use the port annually.The port can handle vessels of about 4200 GRT with 4.5m draught. Harbour 1 General layout. The harbour is protected by two breakwaters. No navigational marks are available for entering the port. The port can be entered only at the day time. 2 Development. The Government of Kerala proposes to develop the harbour into International deep water Multipurpose Seaport for which more area required to reclaim of the sea. Directions 1 Landmarks. Muhiyyidin Mosque(08°22'.59N, 76°59'.19E), a large white and golden two-storeyed building with one big white dome and two high and some low minarets. Dargah Sharif(08°22'.57N, 76°59'.21E), a large green and white two-storeyed building with one big white dome and some low minarets. Lady of Voyage Church (08°22'.68N, 76°59'.64E), a large white multi-storeyed building with red colour holy cross on top. Major lights. Vizhinjam Lighthouse (08°22'.97N, 76°58'.78E) (5.17). Seaward berth 87 m long with 6 m depth alongside, while Leeward berth 80 m in length with 4.5 m depth alongside. In addition to these berths, two fishing jetties in 40 m length available with no maintained depth. 2 Anchorage can be taken in depths of 12 m, about 6 cables SSE of the harbour with no shelter, for passenger disembarkation. The Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited (08° 22’ N, 76° 59’ E) is located in India in the state of Kerala, at 16 km south of the State Capital, Thiruvananthapuram which falls in close proximity to the international East-West shipping route. The Vizhinjam Port is a deep draft all weather multipurpose port with state-of-art facilities to ensure least turnaround time to the vessels. 2 Function. The port is designed primarily to cater to the container transhipment business. The container terminal has two container berths with total quay length of 800m, which can cater to a minimum of two container ships at any time. The port offers state of art facilities for handling container cargos. Port is equipped with 8 Rail Mounted Quay Cranes (RMQCs) for ship-to-shore Container handling facility on these berths having a front outreach of up to 65m for handling 18,000+ TEUs vessels. There are 24 Cantilever Rail Mounted Gantry Cranes(CRMG) / Yard Cranes for handling of Containers in the Container Yard. The port also offers railway yard with rail and 4-lane road connectivity. Two Reach Stackers are provided to handle containers being moved by rails. For handling of empty containers, 6 Side Picks are proposed. For movement of containers between quay, container yard and rail yard 55 Internal Transfer Vehicles (ITVs) are provided. 3 Port Limits. The port limits are tabulated below. Limiting Conditions. Controlling Depth. Vizhinjam International Seaport is naturally deepwater Port with minimal requirement of capital dredging. Minimum depth of18.4m is maintained within Inner Channel and Turning Circle and minimum depth of 20.8m is maintained in the Outer Channel. 2 Tidal Levels. The tides in the region are of the semi-diurnal type. Tide levels are referred to Chart Datum at Vizhinjam, has a mean spring range of about 0.5m and a mean neap range about 0.3m. For more information see Indian Tide Table. 3 Tidal Stream. The tidal stream direction generally varies from 100°– 160° with a mean magnitude 0.5 kn and max 1.0 kn during spring tides. 4 Surface Current. Current flow is parallel to the coast and the surface currents are mostly wind driven. Current speed is mainly in the range of 0 to 0.5 knots reaching maximum upto 02kn during monsoons. 5 Traffic. The port lies in the close proximity (10nm) to the international East-West shipping route. Coastguard and fishing vessels transit at regular intervals from Vizhinjam old port. Fishing activity is generally intense during morning and evening hours. 4. Arrival Information. All arriving vessels are advised to contact Vizhinjam International Seaport control station on VHF Ch 16/10 at least 02 hrs prior arrival to Port Limits. No movements other than anchoring within designated anchorages are to be undertaken without a licensed pilot on board and without express instructions from port control office. Notice of ETA. The arriving vessels should send ETA 7 days, 5 days, 3 days, 2 Days and 24 hours prior to arrival. Port Radio. VHF channels 16 and 10 are used for Port/ Pilots communication. Approach and entry. The port is approached via approach route situated 11 Nm SW of the Port. The port approach channel consists of the two parts with a turning circle of 700 mtrs, the outer approach channel which is the section of the channel outside the breakwater area and the inner approach channel, which is the section of the channel from the head of the breakwaters area to the vessel turning area. Channel specification is as follows. Outer Channel (Length x Width) - 2800 mtrs X 400 mtrs Inner Channel (Length x Width) - 1200 mtrs X 400 mtrs Turning Circle (Radius) - 700 mtrs Turning Circle (08°21.93N, 76°59.65΄E) 700m diameter, dredged to 18.4m, located at the NW end of the Inner Channel. Pilotage. Pilotage is compulsory for all vessels to approach of Harbour/ Channel and Berths. Pilot Boarding Ground is at positon 08° 18.00’ N, 077° 00.00’ E. 5. Harbour. General Layout. The berths are situated on the reclaimed land sheltered by 3000m long breakwater. The buoyed fairway channel with maintained depth of 20.8m extends upto the Turning Circle gives access to berths. The maintained depth at turning circle and inner channel is 18.4m. Development. The future expansion in the port will involve extension of existing 3000m breakwater by another 1000m, construction of a Multipurpose Berth and extension of Container Berth by another 1200m along with Container Yard. Berths. The container terminal has two container berths CB1 and CB2 with total quay length of 800 m; hence 2-3 ships can be berthed depending on LOA subject to 35 meters clearance between each vessel. The maintained depth alongside berth is 18.4 m. 6. Anchorages. Vessels awaiting berth at Vizhinjam International Seaport limited should anchor within the following positions. Port Services. Services like Radio Telegrams/Telephony/Internet etc. Medical Quarantine, Consuls, Ship chandlery and stevedores, Compass adjustment, Tank cleaning, Hull painting. Diving and underwater examination are available with the port. Security. Port is compliance of ISPS (International Ship and Port Facility Security) Code. Present security level is 1. Container Yard. All kinds of containers are handled at the stateof- the-art container terminal, using Cantilever rail mounted Gantry cranes. Container backup area held with the port is 99.8 hectares. Cranes. 08 Rail Mounted Quay Cranes (RMQC) / Ship to Shore Cranes (STS) and 24 Cantilever Rail Mounted Gantry Cranes (CRMG) / Yard Cranes are available. Max lifting is 75 MT with height of boom 106 m and outreach of 76 m. Electrical Facilities. 220KV/33KV Main Receiving Substation (GIS Substation) and 33KV/11KV Port Substation is located within the harbour. Transportation Tugs. 03 nos 70 Ton BP and one 55 Ton BP Tugs available. Names of tugs are Dolphin 26, 27, 28 and 29. Railway. 9.2 kms long railway line connects the Port to Balaramapuram Railway Station Road. 1.7 Km long 4 lane Port access road connects the Port to Airport. Trivandrum International Airport is situated at a distance of 15 kms with daily flights to all major domestic and international airports.
