Kollam Port 2104 1 Position. Kollam Port lies in position (08º 52'.67 N, 76º 34'.90 E), about 4 mile SE of Neendakara Point. 2 Function. The Kollam Port is an artificial harbour operated by Port Officer Neendakara. The principle activity and trade is handling of general cargo. 3 Coastal Topography. The coast is flat with sandy stretches South of the harbour. The intertidal zone is prominent in the Southern stretch, however width is very less along the coast North of the harbour and at the Southern extremities. The coastline North of the harbour is protected by seawall. The coastline is covered with coconut trees all along the coast. The coastal area has few prominent Churches, towers and hotels that can be identified from the sea. 4 Maximum size of the vessel handled. The Port is capable of handling ships upto a maximum draught of 6.0m. Approach and entry. 1 The harbour has two break waters. It has no demarcated navigational channel. The approach to the harbour is recommended on a course of 000° keeping a circle of 2.5 cable from the main breakwater. The next alteration of course is 305° with a circle of 0.8 cable from main breakwater heading in between the Mobile tower and Infant Jesus Cathedral. 2 Port Radio. All arriving vessels are advised to contact Kollam Port on VHF channel 16. 3 Pilotage. Pilotage is compulsory and will be provided by the Port Officer, Neendakara. The pilot boards 0.5 mile SE of Main breakwater head. 1 Landmarks. A large number of conspicuous objects including churches, hotels and towers have come up in the area. (a) Tangasseri Light. exists in position (08º 52' .74 N, 76º 34'.02 E) (Fl 3 15s 42m 18M). (b) Breakwater lights. Two flashing lights are installed at the extremities of the breakwaters. The lights are mounted on a small yellow coloured pole flashing red and green indicating extremities of main and lee breakwaters. The recommended anchorage is a open roadstead only for waiting. 2 Berthing and Wharfs. The wharf is of 116m long and 25m wide concrete piled jetty along the lay of the leeward breakwater capable of handling ships upto a draught of 6m. The depth maintained alongside is 6.3m. Request for berthing is to be sent to Port Officer, Neendakara 3 Tugs. One tug of 630 Hp capacity is available 24hr. Tug will be available at the time of ship’s arrival and can be requested from Port Officer Neendakara on VHF. 4 Tidal levels. maximum range 0.8m. 5 Tidal Stream. The currents near Kollam are predominantly North-North Westerly with rates ranging from 0.02 to 0.7 Knot. Alongside the berth, the currents are lesser and measure upto a maximum of 0.2 Knot only. 1 Port Facilities. The port has yard of eight godowns for storage of cargo. However, no cargo handling facilities exist at the moment. 2 Rescue and Distress. Port tug can be used for rescue. 3 Services. Radio, Telegram/Telephony, Medical, Quarantine, Ship Chandlery, Stevedores, Police, Ambulance and Fire services are available in the port. 4 Supplies. A limited quantity of fuel, fresh water and provisions can be made available by trucks on request. 5 Pollution Control. The Kollam Port has strict Environmental regulations and follows the Local Pollution Control Board regulations. 6 Shore leave. is permitted subject to immigration rules. 7 Small craft facilities. Existing yachts can be used subject to availability. Communications. It is not easy to identify, even from a short distance, as the fort and other buildings are low and screened by trees. A red tableland, about 4 miles N of Anjengo, may be of assistance in identifying it. Anchorage may be taken in depths of 21m, sand and shell, about 1 mile offshore abreast Anjengo. The bottom is foul and rocky in depths of less than about 18 m.
