BARREN ISLAND

General Information
Barren Island (12º 17'N, 93º 51'E) lies 44 miles E of Outram Island and is 312m high with densely wooded cliffs rising from the water’s edge. The outer slope of the crater, which is situated at the center of the island, is 
covered with foliage. The interior of the crater is visible through a gap on its W side. A thin column of steam rises from a sulfur bed on the side and near the summit. The volcano is live and visual to the naked eye from 
a distance of over 9 miles. It is known to spew smoke and ash. 

Anchorage may be obtained in depth of 27m, about 2 cables off a beach on the SW side. The tidal streams at half flood at this anchorage was reported to be running SE at a rate of 2½ knots. 

A nook formed by an outflow of lava through the gap in the crater wall described previously is a recommended landing. Hot springs trickle through the beach near this landing place. There is no other source of water during 
the dry season.

A bank with a least depth of 88m has been reported to lie about 55 miles ENE of Barren Island.
