NARCONDAM ISLAND

General Information

Narcondam Island (13º 27'N, 94º 16'E) is an extinct volcano, 710m high which lie about 70 miles E of North Andaman island. It is shaped like a truncated cone. Several small rocks above water lie close around the island. 
There appears to be deep waters outside these rocks. A light is exhibited at the N end of Narcondam Island; it is visible between the bearing 054°-194°. The summit of the island is always enveloped in cloud in monsoon season. It appears that clouds are being formed near the summit when observed from the weather side. The lone cloud atop the island should be visual to a discerning seafarer before the island itself comes in sight in good visibility. 

Anchorage may be obtained 1 cable W of a large rock on NNW side of the Narcondam Island. Landing should not be attempted except during calm weather. 

The nature of bottom around the island mainly consists of corals and rocks. Anchorage near the island for vessels larger than 20m in length is not recommended.

Barata Bay indents the E side of the island; a grove of palm trees lies at its head and the bay has single beach on which there is no surf in calm weather. It is a good landing place. There is no anchorage off the bay.
