Chart 4163     APPROACHES TO CHOWRA ISLAND

1	A coral bank with a least depth of 2.4m lies between 1.1 miles NW and 5 cables S of the S point of Chowra Island (8°  27' N, 93° 02'.5E).

2	Chowra Island, is about 24 miles SSE of Batti Malv Island, is for the most part low but its S end rises almost vertically in a rocky pinnacle to an elevation of 81m and looks, with the contiguous low  portion, like a hat, hence it was named Sombrero by the early Portuguese navigators.
	
3	Chowara Island is locally important for its monopoly for the cooking-pot manufacture in Nicobar and for the skill of its inhabitants in the construction of dug-out canoes.
	
4	Tidal Streams near the island set NE with the rising tide and SW with the falling tide.
	
5	Hinniya, on the NE coast of the island, is the principal village and was at one time capital of Nicobar Islands.
	
6	Anchorage may be obtained in depths of about 17m about ½ mile offshore from Hinniya.
