CHART 4137	PORT CORNWALLIS 

Approaches to Port Cornwallis
Temple Island (13º23' N, 93º03'.9E), a wooded islet, lies 1¼ miles SW of South Passage Reef and forms the S entrance point of Thoroughfare Creek, a narrow channel separating Smith Island from the E coast of North Andaman Island. A shelving reef extends about ¼ mile E of the island.
Turtle Island (13º22'N, 93º05' E), two wooded islets, the higher 28m high and the other 18m high lie 2.6 miles SSW of Delgarno Island. A fringing reef surrounds each islet and there is a sandy beach on the NW side of the SW islet.
Turtle Reef, with a sand bank in the middle, lies ½ miles N of Turtle Island with a 4.6m patch ½ mile ESE. A clear passage, 3 to 4 cables wide and with depths of not less than 20m in the fairway, leads between Turtle Islands and the E coast of Smith Island. There is a good landing place on the NE coast of Smith Island about 1¼ miles SSE of the N point of the island and opposite the SW Turtle Island in a gap between reefs.
PORT CORNWALLIS 
Topography
Smith Island (13º20'N, 93º04' E), is densely wooded and is 131m high at its S part.
	Cape Bayett, 3 miles SSE of the N point of Smith island, and mangrove Point, about 4 cables S of it. 
Back Bay lies 2.2 miles SSW between Mangrove Point and Ross (Bopung) Island,. There is a landing place at Tarap tala in the NW corner of the bay in a gap between the reefs.
	Back Bay Reef, drying 1.6m lies 1 mile S of Mangrove Point and almost in the center of the Bay. The reef is visible at high water except when the sea is very smooth.
	A shoal, with a least depth of 1.7m, extends about 5 cables S of Mangrove Point.
	Back Bay Shoal, with a least depth of 1.8m, lies 1 mile SE of Mangrove Point in the approach to Back Bay; the sea breaks over this shoal only in heavy weather.
	Leading Lines, Tree islets lie in line with Cape Price bearing 341½ºleads E of Back Bay Shoal and Hand Hill, a sharp wooded hill, 205m high standing 2¾ miles WSW of Dundas Point (13º16'.3N, 93º04' E), in line with the SE of Ross Island bearing 235º leads SE of the shoal. 
	Ross Island, (Bopung), (13º18'N, 93º04'.05 E), 467m high, is connected with Smith Island by a sandy ridge. The island except on the NW side, is fringed by a reef which extends up to 4 cables offshore.
	Ross Island Light (13º17'.9N, 93º04'.6E). is exhibited from white square masonry tower 10m high, situated on the summit of Bopung Hill on RossIsland, at the entrance of Arial Bay. 
	Dundas Point(13º16'.3N, 93º04' E), 1½ miles S of Ross Island is sharp and rocky and fronted by a narrow drying reef extending 1¾ cables NNE; the point rises to an elevation of 116m about 4 cables from its extremity. A shoal patch with a least depth of 6.9m, rock, lies about 6 cables ENE of Dundas Point and is steep to.
	Barkeley Point (13º16'.85N, 93º02'.87 E) is a blunt shaped rocky edge which lies NW of Dundas point at a distance of 1.3 miles
	Middle Reef, drying 2.5m, lies about 4 cables E of Dundas point.
	South Rock, 1m high, lies about 3½ cables SSE of Dundas Point.
General Information
	Port Cornwallis (Tolobu Tong). Diglipur also known as Port Cornwallis lies on the eastern side of the North Andaman Islands,around290 Km N of Port Blair. The town is located on the southern side of Aerial Bay and is about 43 m above sea level. . It has an area of 884 Km2 and a population of approximately 43,183 (2011 census). Kaplong River, the only river in the Andaman group of islands passes through Diglipur, and the highest mountain peak in the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago, Saddle Peak (732 m), lies about 10 km to south. Diglipur is a small town with basic amenities, and a small market. Exports are raw timber, fish and vegetable in small quantities; imports are foodstuff, piece goods and construction material.
Entry
	Port Cornwallis is entered between Ross Island and Dundas Point. There are considerable depths at the entrance and the harbour affords sheltered anchorage in all season. A conspicuous light tower exists near the jetty. It has powerful lamps that lights up the entire area at night. It can be seen from miles out at sea when approaching the port from E. 
	Hood Point, lies 4 cables WNW of Ross Island on the NE side of the harbour on Smith Island.
	Minerva Bay, on the N side, lies between Hood Point, and Perseverance Point, 1¾ miles NW.  
Anchorage
	Anchorage may be obtained in depths of about 23m the bottom being mud, about 1.4 miles W of Hood Point. During SW monsoon anchorage may be obtained in depths of 20 min the entrance to the bay. Mariners should note the shoals, with the depths from 2 to 10.6m, 8 cables west of Dundas point and the isolated shoal with a depth of 9.8  m, 4 cables E of Bakkely Point
	Brush Island(Erkiro), (13º17'.6N, 93º03'.1 E), lies in the mid-channel about 1.6 miles NNW of Dundas Point and is surrounded by reefs. The island, which is prominent, is composed of broken coral and stones with a few trees on it
	A light is exhibited from a RCC bottle-shaped tower, 13m high on the NE side of the island. However the structure is fully hooded by foliage and tree around it.
	A shoal bank extending from ½ to 1 mile W of Brush Island has a least depth of 0.9m at its W extremity.
	Aerial Bay Beacon (Fl G 4s) (13º17'.5N, 93º02'.45 E) exists 5.7 cables WSW of Brush Island Light.
Aerial Bay
	Aerial Bay is shallow and lies about1¼ mile NW of Barkley Point. Vessels approaching the bay should take care to avoid the shoal bank with a least depth of 0.9m W of Brush Island. Aerial Bay Jetty is a 110 m long and 20 m wide concrete jetty with integral tyre fenders and depth of 5-6 m alongside. The jetty has an inner end used for berthing small ferries. The alighting point at the inner end could be used by ships to berth their boats (RIB/ Gemini). A 20T mobile crane is available on request.

	An ‘L’ shaped concrete jetty which is 107 m long and 20 m wide which extends N then NE from Kopi Point(13º16'.85N, 93º01'.65 E), The lay of jetty is 230-050 with a minimum alongside depth of 3.9 m, the E entrance point of the bay, is connected by road to Durgapur and Diglipur Villages.
	Sea Planes will operate during day time hours between Port Blair and Port Cornwallis harbour.  All vessels are to exercise caution. Port control tower will inform about flying operation on CH 16 to all vessels.
Atlanta Bay
	Atlanta Bay lies between Barkley Point and Dundas Point. This bay, though deep, is encumbered with shoal patches.
	A shoal patch with a least depth of 2m, rock, lies 6 cables SE of Barkley Point with a 5.4m patch lying 1½ cables farther S. A 9.6m patch lies 4 cables E of Barkley Point. Good anchorage may be obtained in the entrance to the bay during the SW monsoon.
	Chatham Island (Tebi Chiro) (13º19'N, 93º01'.2 E), densely wooded, lies with Chatham Point the NE point of the Island, about 1 mile WNW of Perseverance Point. Between Chatham Point and South Point, the S tip of the island at a distance of 13.5 cables, the coast is mainly fringed with mangroves and reefs extending 1½ cable offshore at places.
	North Island (13º20'.5N, 93º01'.2 E), 66m high and densely wooded, lies about 4½ cables N of Settlement Point, the NW point of Chatham Island. Wharf Island, 25m high, lies close W of the S end of North Island with South Island  3 cables farther W. 
	Jungle Island, fringed all around with mangroves, lies 1 mile E of North Island in the middle of the S entrance to Thoroughfare Creek. 
	A narrow channel with depths not less than 5.5m leads between Wharf and South Islands and then SW into Blair Bay, an extensive but very shallow backwater covered with mangroves.
