Beypore Anchorage Chart 2119 General information 5.119 1 The port of Beypore (110 09’.09 N, 0750 48’.05 E) is located midway between two major ports, Kochi and New Mangalore. It is situated at the mouth of Beypore/Chaliyar River. Presently Beypore harbour can take only barges or small sea going vessels (limited to 2000 DWT) as the available water depth is about 3.5m. At present capital dredging is going on to make the depth to 5.0m. Function 5.120 1 Large vessels are handled through lighterage operations. The Port commenced the operation as a dedicated wharf of Calicut Port, and now handles the majority of traffic of the minor ports of Kerala. Beypore, due to its ideal location has the potential to be developed as an all-weather Port to cater the need of Malabar Coast region and handle both Cargo and Passenger traffic. 2 Due the ideal climatic conditions, fishing activity is relatively higher during the months of Sep to Nov. Traffic normally becomes dense especially in the morning and in the evening due to the movement of these boats.One mother boat along with 3 – 4 small boats and trawlers are mainly used for the purpose. 3 Approach and entry. The river mouth is approached between two breakwaters which extend SW from the N and S entrance points as shown on the chartThe approach channel is of 180 m width and 3.5m deep. 4 Traffic. The port is handling approximately 1, 50,000 MT of cargo and 20,000 passengers in a year. The passengers are mainly from Lakshadweep. Limiting conditions 5.121 1 Depth. The bar of Beypore River is having a least charted depth of 3.5m between the breakwaters however, the Port Conservator should be consulted for the latest information on depths. 2 Tidal levels. Mean spring range about 0.9 m; mean neap range about 0.3 m. See information in Tide Tables. During low waters, sea water colour changes from pale green to brownish from the mouth of Beyporeriver and extends up to 4-5 NM in seaward direction. During high waters, sea water colour again changes from brownish to pale green as discoloration recedes to Beypore river mouth. Current/drift is less than 1-2Knots during the month of Sep to Nov. 3 Local weather. At low water a NW wind makes crossing the bar unsafe. Arrival Information 5.122 1 Anchorages. Anchorage may be obtained in 6m, about 1.3 miles WSW of the flagstaff; moderate sized vessels usually anchor in 8.5m, about 5 cables farther WSW. Large vessels anchor farther out according to draught. During the month of Sep – Nov winds are generally from south westerly directions with an average speed 6-8 Knots. Weather remains fair and ideal for anchoring. Tidal stream follow north easterly direction. Thick layer of soft mud in the sea bed provide excellent holding ground for anchorage. 2 Pilotage. Pilotage is compulsory for all merchant vessels. Beypore port channel monitors MMB channel 16 and pilot is available on MMB channel 12. Generally passenger ships having a draught of 2 – 3menter the channel. Harbour information 5.123 1 Storm signals are displayed from the signal station; the general system is used. 2 Landmark.Beypore Lighthouse (11º 09'.4 N, 75º 48'.4 E) 3 Major light.Beypore Light-as above. Directions 5.124 1.Caution. Fishing stakes or poles may be encountered in the approaches to the breakwaters and within the harbour. 2 Vessels approaching from S should pass W of Black Rocks which lie towards the SE end of a reef that extends about 8 cables S of the river entrance. A rock with a depth of 1.5 m over it lies 5 cables SSW of Black Rocks. 3 At night vessels should not enter depths of less than 15 m. Useful marks: 5.125 1 Pillar (6 m in height) (11º 07' N, 75º 50' E). 2 Kota Kunnu Hill (11º 08' N, 75º 51' E) Berths 5.126 1 Port is having a 310 m long wharf, out of this 152 m is old wharf. At present the Cargo import is mainly from North Indian states. This includes grain, soda ash and cattle feed. Dates are imported from Persian Gulf. The Cargo Export is mainly to Lakshadweep. This includes General cargo, construction materials, and provision and petroleum products. The wooden vessels (Dhows) constructed here are very famous and are even exported to foreign countries. Landing 5.127 1 At times when the bar is unsafe for passage, good landing for boats may be found in the small bays S of Beypore. Port services 5.128 Sl Services Remarks (a) Repairs Only minor repairs can be undertaken at local workshop. (b) Lighters At anchorage. (c) Barge tugs 03 tugs of 300 HP available on request from 0800hrs to 1800hrs on VHF channel 6 and port control is available round the clock on MMB channel 16. Hiring charges for 130 HP is Rs 1340 and for 200, 300 HP is Rs 2000 excluding tax. (d) Cranes 3T x 4 5T x 1 20T Mobile x 1 12T Mobile x 1 (e) Rescue and Distress. Coast Guard Station at Beypore, Coastal Security Police with boat. (f) Dangerous Cargo Regulations.As per Mercantile Maritime Department recommendations. Petroleum products are handled in drums. (g) Supplies.Fuel in barrels andfresh water available with Rs 100(excluding tax) per ton. (h) Medical.Calicut Medical College (j) Small Craft. With customs. (k) Shore leave Permitted with pass.
