Tellicherry (Thalessery)

General information

1.	Position.Tellicherry (Thalassery) (( 11º 45' N, 075º 29' E)), is an open roadstead port situated 24 miles SE of Mount Dilli; the town of that name, backed by hills which are thickly covered with coconut palms and other trees, lies about 1 mile inland.
2.	Function. No activity is undertaken at present by the port..

Tidal levels

Mean spring   range about 1.0 m; mean neap range about 0.6 m. See information in Tide Tables. 

Anchorages

Anchorage for large vessels in unsettled weather is well offshore in depths of 12 m. but in good weather a vessel can anchor in 9m, soft mud, about 2 miles WSW of Nilot Point (11º 44' N, 75º 30' E), as shown on the chart.

Small craft

Small craft can anchor NW of Thalai, a village situated 1½ miles SE of NilotPoint (11º44'N,75º 30' E), vessels using this anchorage must pass S of Thalai Rock (11º 43' N, 75º 30' E), local knowledge is desirable.


Cannanore (Kannur)

General information

1.	Position. Cannanore (Kannur) port (11º 51' N, 75º 23' E) is a open roadstead port located in Mopla Bay 9 miles NW of Tellicherry, This is a natural bay with about 1.2 km width and maximum water depth of about 3m.  The northern side of the bay consists of a narrow laterite formation and southern side is a long beach protected with few groynes.  Fort          St. Angelo, a historical monument is situated on the northern side of the bay.
  
 2.	Topography. The old town of Kannur which lies N of Mopla Bay is almost hidden by coconut trees

3.	Function. No activity is undertaken at present by the port.

Regular firing exercises occur in an area extending 1¼ miles SSW from the shore, as shown on the chart.

Useful mark.

The flagstaff on Fort Saint Angelo Tower (24 m in height) (11º 51'.0 N, 75º 22'.5 E). The fort is an old Portuguese fort standing on a low rocky point at the S end of the town.

Anchorage

Anchorage can be obtained in about 9.1m, mud, good holding ground, about 1¾ mile SSW of Fort Saint Angelo.

Landing

1.	Landing can be effected in a small bight ENE of Fort Saint Angelo at the N end of Mopla Bay; ships' boats should use the beach fronting the Port and Customs office, thus avoiding the rocks awash in the E part of the bay.
2.	In fine weather the steps on the E side of the rocky point close E of Fort Saint Angelo may be used.
3.	A heavy swell, when the SW monsoon blows strongly, makes landing impracticable.
