The principle activity of the port is export/import of fishing products. Two breakwaters protect the harbour. B)Function of Port of Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport:The Vizhinjam International Transhipment Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport is and ambitious project taken up by goverment of kerala. it is designed primarily to cater container transhipment besides multi puprose and break bulk cargo. The prot is being currently developed in landlord model with a public private pratnership component on a sesin, build, finance, operate and transfer (DBFOT)basis. 4 Maximum size of vessels handled. The port can handle vessels of about 4200 GRT with 4.5m draught. 5 Pilotage. No navigational marks are available for entering the port. The port can be entered only at the day time. 6 Port Radio. Port keeps watch on VHF. 7 Land Marks. The Vilinjam harbour area has numerous conspicuous objects all along the coast. These include Light Tower, Mosques, Churches, Radio Towers and resorts with prominent roofs, domes and chimneys. Few of them are as follows: (a) Vizhinjam Light Tower. Vilinjam Lighthouse (white round masonry tower, red bands, 36 m in height) (8° 22'.89 N, 76° 58'.82 E). (b) Muhiyyidin Mosque. in position (08° 22'.59 N,76° 59'.20 E) Lady of Good Voyage Church near Vizhinjam Harbour (c) Lady of Good Voyage Church.in position (08° 22'.67 N, 76° 59'.64 E). 8 Navigational Aids. Vizhinjam Light Tower. 9 Anchorage. Vessels awaiting berth at Vizhinjam International Seaport limited should anchor within the following positions. The minimum depth at Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited in anchorage areas ‘A’ & ‘B’ is 25-30 m. Services like Radio Telegrams/Telephony/Internet etc. Medical Quarantine, Consuls, Ship chandlery and stevedores, Compass adjustment, Tank cleaning, Hull painting. Diving and underwater examination are available with the port. TUGS: a) total 03 nos. azimuth sternf drive tugs of 70 tonne bollard pull and 0155 capacities are presently available with the port. b) 6000 hp /70 BPT c) the tugs are deployed for assistance in maneuvers at the sole discretion of pilot and on reuqest of vessels master. d) the tugs are available at a short notice. e) the language of communication with the tugs is English/Hindi /malayalam. f) the tug hiring charges are subject to prevaling policies / triff hoisted on the ports website www.adaniports.com and requisitioned through vessels agents. Rescue and distress: The coast guard station vizhinjam is located 03 km, from the port area. one CG fast patrolling ship, 02 interceptor boats and 02 interceptor crafts are stationed at vizhinjam. In addition, 02 coastal police boats and 01 Marine ambulance manged by kerala fisheries department is also available . 9.2. Security. Port is compliance of ISPS (International Ship and Port Facility Security) Code. Present security level is 1. 9.3 Supplies. Fuel oil, fresh water and dry & fresh provisions are available on call. 9.4 Facilities. Container Yard. All kinds of containers are handled at the stateof- the-art container terminal, using Cantilever rail mounted Gantry cranes. Container backup area held with the port is 99.8 hectares. 10 A) Berthing and Wharfs. Port of Kovalam-Vizhinjam: The harbour consists of one Port Wharf and one jetty (under construction), the details of which is as follows: Sl. The container terminal has two container berths CB1 and CB2 with total quay length of 800 m; hence 2-3 ships can be berthed depending on LOA subject to 35 meters clearance between each vessel. The maintained depth alongside berth is 18.4 m. 11 Facilities. Fuel, fresh water and provisions are available on payment. 12 Clubs/Recreation. Beaches, resorts and pubs are available near the harbour. 13 Development. The Government of Kerala proposes to develop the harbour into commercial harbour of International standards for which more land area has been acquired.
