Bedi Bandar Port and Rozi Anchorage

General information
9.126
Position. Bedi Bandar (22º 31' N, 70º 02' E) is situated some 3 miles inland on the W bank of Bedi Bandar Creek and about 4½ miles NW of the city of Jamnagar. New Rozi Port jetty is situated at 1.2 miles NE of New Bedi Bandar Port.

Function. Bedi Bandar and New Rozi Port are the ports for Jamnagar, the headquarters of Jamnagar District. Principal exports are salt, cattle feed, rice and soya beans; the main imports include dates, fertiliser, rock phosphate and grain.

Topography. Chhad (22º 34' N, 69º 59' E) and Jindra Bet, adjoining ENE, consist of sand and mud flats intersected by creeks and fringed with mangroves extending SE to Bedi Bandar Creek (see below); there is a prominent sandspit along the NE face of Jindra Bet. Rozi Island (22º 32' N, 70º 03' E), situated on the E side of Bedi Bandar Creek, is rocky and about 11 m high. East of Rozi Island the coast consists of sand and mud flats extending about 3 miles offshore, it is intersected by creeks and fringed with mangroves. Bedi Bandar Creek enters the Gulf of Kachchh between the head of New Rozi Port Jetty (22º 33'.9 N, 70º 02'.4 E). The creek dries S of the entrance but at high water tugs, boats and lighters can navigate the creek to a position beyond Bedi Bandar.

Approach and entry. The port is entered through Bedi Bandar Creek; but cargo is worked by lighters, as the tide permits, to and from Rozi Anchorage (9.128) 5 miles NNE.

Traffic. About 250 vessels use the port annually.

Limiting conditions

Mean tidal levels.. Rozi mean spring range about 5.5 m; mean neap range about 3.0 m. 
Density of water at the anchorage is 1.025 g/cm3.
Local weather.  The port is adversely effected by the monsoon, particularly in the afternoons, when strong winds and a heavy swell are likely to occur. West winds prevail from February to October.

Port operations

Port operations. The port is an all weather lighterage port, which is open all the year round; however, delays to lighterage operations must be expected during periods of inclement weather.

Port radio. There is a port radio station at Bedi Bandar. For details see the relevant List of Radio Signals.
Outer anchorage. A large vessel, with cargo for Bedi Bandar, may anchor 1¾ miles N of Kalvan Shoal (22º35'.6N, 70º02'.7E) (9.131) in depths of about 15 m, mud, as shown on the chart. For details of the small vessel anchorage see 9.132.

Pilotage. Pilots is available on request, between Pirotan Island (22º 36'.0 N, 69º 57'.5 E) and the anchorages off Kalvan Shoal. 
Requirement for local knowledge. Much of the ground off Rozi is rocky or shallow with numerous unmarked dangerous wrecks and dangers lying in the offing; to approach the anchorages local knowledge is necessary.

Harbour

General layout. From close W of New Rozi Port Jetty. .Bedi Bandar Creek leads, 3 miles generally S, to the lighter quays at Bedi Bandar.
Storm signals are displayed near Rozi Mata Temple (22º 31'.5 N, 70º 02'.7 E) by using the general system

Principal marks:
Four Radio Towers  (22º 32'.3 N, 70º 03'.0 E) stand near the centre of Rozi Island.
Water tower (22º 31'.8 N, 70º 03'.1 E), with another water tower located nearby, and two flagstaffs standing about 3 cables SW.

Directions

While approaching Rozi Island from W do not alter course until Kalvan Shoal bears 185º, thereby avoiding Ranson Shoal (22º 37'.2 N, 70º 02'.4 E) and the dangers which extend offshore between Pirotan Island and Rozi Island (6 miles SE).
While approaching or leaving the anchorages, vessels should pass N of Ranson Shoal taking care to avoid the shoal water extending about 5 cables ESE of it; also passing well clear of the numerous charted wrecks and areas of foul ground that lie in this vicinity.

Useful marks

Bedi Bandar Light discontinued. Only a white metal framework tower (12 m in height) exist in position (22º 33'.0 N, 70º 0l'.9 E).
Two   Radio Masts (elevation 37 m) (22º 29'.7 N, 
70º 02'.6 E).

Kota Tower (elevation 51 m) (round structure) 
(22º 27'.6 N, 70º 04'.2 E) stands on the W side of a fort at Jamnagar.

Pratap Clock Tower (22º 28'.6 N, 70º 03'.4 E) stands close NNW of Jamnagar.

Berths

Anchorage. Anchorage may be obtained by small craft 5 cables NE of Kalvan Shoal in depths of about 6 m, mud, as shown on the chart; the anchorage is well sheltered from W winds.
Mooring buoy. One mooring buoy existing close to New Rozi Port jetty at position (22º 34'.3 N, 70º 02'.7 E).

New Rozi Port Jetty. A stone jetty extends about 7 cables NNW from Rozi Railway Station at the N end of Rozi Island. New Rozi Port Jetty has been fully constructed. 

Bedi Bandar Creek lighter berths. In the vicinity of Rozi Island, there are lighter quays near the mouth of the creek. At Bedi Bandar a basin, which dries at half tide, provides 3050 m of lighter berths and a cargo wharf 335 m long.

Port services

Repairs: There is a small dry dock length 70.1 m, width 13.4 m, depth on sill at MHWS 2.65 m which is used for port craft.
Other facilities: hospital at Jamnagar; salvage tug; lighters and tugs.
Supplies: Limited provisions; fresh water by barge.
Communications: roads and railways; air to Bombay.
