General information. The town of Honavar (14º 16'.5 N, 74º 26'.6 E) lies on the N side of the Sharavati River about 1 mile SE of its entrance.
Function. Honavar is an open roadstead port of some importance with a considerable export of iron ore, timber, tiles and betel nuts.

Pilotage. A licensed pilot is available.
Storm signals are displayed from a flagstaff standing near the S end of the town and from Kasarkod, 2 miles S; at both places the brief system is used. See 1.45.

Directions. The anchorage can be approached directly from seaward.
No reliable directions can be given since the bar across the river mouth changes constantly; at low water there are heavy breakers, but at high water small craft with local knowledge can enter.

Useful marks:
Honavar Lighthouse  (14º 16'.5 N,  74º 26'.6 E) (6.113);   and  another  light  (round  masonry  hut  on a  white   tower,  elevation  7 m)  stands ½ cables SW.   From mid-September to mid-June both lights are exhibited. 
Anchorage. Good anchorage can be obtained about 1½ miles offshore in a depth of about 9 m, mud and fine sand, as shown on the chart.
Supplies: provisions in small quantities; limited fresh water with no delivery arrangements.
