Approaches to Jaigarh and Angre Ports Chart 2011 General information 7.101, 2105 Position. Jaigarh Town (17º 18' N, 73º 13' E) stands on the NE side of the peninsula which forms the SW bank of the Shastri River. Function. A well sheltered harbour is formed by the river estuary with fairly easy access, even during the SW monsoon, principle activities of the port is import and export of cargo. 2a Number of ships and tonnage handled per year – 100 ships per year with maximum of 120,000 DWT. 2b Maximum size of vessel handled – Vessel of 14m draught. Approach and entry. Jaigarh Bay is entered between the N point of Jaigarh Head (17º 18' N, 73º 12' E) and Bhandarwadi Point 1¾ miles NE. Tidal information 7.102 Tidal levels. Mean spring range about 2 m; mean neap range about 0.9 m. See information in Tide Tables. Harbour information 7.103 Storm signals are displayed from Jaigarh Head by using the brief system is used. See 1.48. 2 Foul ground and isolated rocks extend from tip of Jaigarh head to 2 cables S of breakwater light. Katane Reef (1.7 miles NE of breakwater light) Mora Sands a drying sandspit that extends WSW from Tavsal Point to the E edge of the channel abreast the town of Jaigarh. Kurli Sand a drying spit of sand and mud (charted as an island) lies on the S bank of the river close E of the inner anchorage. 5 JSW Jaigarh Port has constructed a breakwater (509m long, 10m wide). A light has been installed at the seaward end of the breakwater in position 17°18’.6N, 073°11’.6E with characteristics Fl (W) 20s Landmark: Jaigarh Head Lighthouse (17º 17'.95 N, 73º 11'43 E) (7.98). Directions 7.104 Caution. Local knowledge is considered essential as the depths over the bar are liable to change. W hile approaching Jaigarh Bay from S, vessel should not close Kardeshwar Point (17º 18'.2 N, 73º 11'.6 E) within 3 cables; the point appears as a level, almost barren, plateau ending in steep laterite cliffs upon which a temple stands. There after, pass well clear of the foul ground lying NE of the point and steer towards the channel which crosses the bar. For entering JSW Jaigarh Port vessels are to settle at entering harbour course of 110° at the first set of buoys which is 1.85NM in direction 315° from Jaigarh light. The length of navigable channel is 3.3 NM approx where 9 lit channel buoys have been installed. Width of navigable channel is 200 m at first set of buoys. Width of turning circle inside the channel is 510m. The bar of Shastri River extends NNE, from shore, just ESE of Damankul Bay to a position just E of Katane Reef. A channel, with a least charted depth of 3.3 m leads across the S part of the bar about 2 cables offshore; there was a least charted depth of 2.1 m on the bar situated close N of the channel. About 1 cable wide navigable channel, leads S then SE between the town of Jaigarh and Mora Sands to the inner anchorage. During the fine weather season the channel is marked from September to May inclusive by two light-buoys (red, conical), moored on its E side. The channel continues E, passing N of Kurli Sand, and has a least depth of about 6.1 m in the fairway which lies about 1 cable off the N bank of the river; the channel S of Kurli Sand is shallow. Useful marks: Jaigarh Fort (17º 18'.0 N, 73º 13'.4 E) is an old Maratha fortress, within which are some houses, standing on a rocky point. Trize Kila (17º 18'.1 N, 73º 14'.5 E), a ruined fort, stands on Tavsal Point. Two chimneys (275m heights) are located at positions 17º17’.75N, 73º12.73’E and 17º17’.70N, 73º12’.78E. Flashing light on chimneys seen up to 40nm at night and during day visible up to 30nm. Anchorages and berth 7.105 Anchorage. Vessels with draught greater than 10m can anchor in recommended anchorage which is 3 nm on bearing 315 from Jaigarh light, vessels with draughts greater than 15m to anchor beyond 20m contour. Anchorage provides good holding ground and comprises of soft mud. Shastri River. Good sheltered anchorage by small craft may be obtain close E of the town of Jaigarh; however, the best inner anchorage is W of Kurli Sand, about 7 cables SE of Custom House Light, in depths of 8 m. Berth. A concrete jetty, 81 m long with a depth alongside of about 5 m, lies 3 cables S of Custom House Light. Two new berths have been constructed by JSW Jaigarh Port Limited. Length of berth no 1 and 2 are 295 m and 255m respectively. Vessels are to use only polypropylene ropes for mooring. Steel wire ropes are to be used as spring lines only with 40 meter long polypropylene tails. During berthing/unberthing, the vessel propeller must have 90% immersion and trim not to exceed 1% of LOA. Fenders at the berth are 3.6 m above water level. 4 Pilotage Pilot boards at position 17° 19’.9N, 73° 08’.3E JSW Jaigarh Port Control is authority for requesting pilot. 5 Arrival Information Master/shipping agents are to send 7/5/3/2 days and 24/12/06 hrs ETA notice to JSW port office by fax and email to the following: (i) samuel.david@jsw.in (ii) operations.jpl@jsw.in. Small craft 7.107 Small craft can navigate through Shastri River which flows into the head of Jaigarh Bay. The river is tidal as far as the important town of Sangameshwar, 28 miles from its mouth; it is shallow but free from dangers in the fairway. The river is joined by three tributaries at about 18 miles from its mouth. Fishing 7.107a Fishing remains main occupation of locals. Trawling is the main mode of fishing with trawlers running predominantly parallel to the bay. Apart from trawlers one mother boat along with 3 – 4 small boats with large nets to encircle an area to catch fish were also used for fishing. Due the ideal climatic conditions, fishing activity is relatively high during the months of Sep to Nov. Traffic normally becomes dense especially in the morning and is considerably less in the evening as the boats return back to the harbour. Angre port (17°17'N, 73°14'E), all weather port, lies along the southern bank of the Shastri River at Jaigarh in Ratnagiti district of Maharastra. The port is approx. 110 nm south of Mumbai and 126 nm North of Goa. 2 Function. A well sheltered harbour constructed by Chowgules (estd. in 1916). This port is an all-weather port handling all types of cargo. 3 Port Authority. Manager (Operational), Angre Port Private Ltd., Sande Lavgan, P.O.-Jaigad, Tal. & Dist.- Ratnagiri – 415614, Maharashtra, India. 4 Port Operations. Being an all-weather port, it is normally open throughout the year and operates 24x7 hours for berthing, pilotage & towage. 5 Approach Channel. The jetty is approached through a 5.5 kms length and 160 mtrs width buoyed channel which leads in SE direction from the fairway light buoy (safe water) (17°19'.84N, 73° 11'.14E). The channel is marked with buoys. At the end of the channel there is a turning circle, 440 mtrs in diameter, near main berthing area. 6 Tides and current. Tides are semi-diurnal with average variation of 2.80 mtrs. 7 Harbour Information. Mora Sands, a drying sand pit exists from east of channel buoy no. 14, 12 and 10 till Tavsal Point. Ferry point is situated North-north-east of channel buoy no. 11. A ship lift facility is also developed east of Angre jetty. 8 Pilotage is available and boarding point is 17°19'.90N, 73°10'.80E (0.34 nm WNW from the fairway Lt. buoy). 9 Anchorages. Anchorage area for the waiting ship is bounded by following co-ordinates: - 17°19'.82N, 73°09'.16E 17°19'.82N, 73°10'.08E 17°20'.54N, 73°10'.08E 17°20'.54N, 73°09'.16E 10 Berths. A total quay length of 350 mtrs either side with 43 mtrs width having four berths, one berth for liquid cargo while another three beths uses for containers/multipurpose facilities. An approach jetty is also available for berthing of small tugs. 11 Tugs. Two tugs of 40 tons bollard pull each available. 12 Crane. One mobile crane of 65 tons capacity is available. 13 Ship lifts facilities. Port is capable of handling hull, machinery and underwater repair at ship repair yard. Ship lift facility can handle vessels of Maximum LOA 116m, and beam-24m. 14 Local weather. Normally, throughout the year winds are from NW direction but during the monsoon (June to September) wind are from SW directions and sea state at the roads is moderate to heavy. 15 Rescue and Distress.
