KUNDAPURA (COONDAPOOR)

1	The Port of Kundapura (38°.18’ N, 740 40’ E) in is situated at the confluence of the rivers Haladi and Chakranadi at Gangoli village. The port is 53mileNorth of Mangalore. Kundapura is a riverine port and during the South West monsoon the port is closed (16th May to 15th September) to traffic as the sea is generally rough.
2	The port is protected against wind and swells by a Rocky chain extending for 1.5 mile. West-South-West ward from the entrance by “Pate Rock” at the western edge and astretch of rocks roughly 3mile.
3	Principal Activities. In the past Kundapura was a busy port; however of late the shipping activity has declined considerably due to competition from other ports
4	Topography. The coastline is low, sandy and fringed withcoconut trees.
5	Approach and entry. From WSW, the port is approached, and entered between two low lying spits of land which form the estuary of the Haladi and Chakra Rivers.

Limiting conditions

1    	Depths. The bar across the entrance to Kundapura  is continually changing; charted depth at the entrance is 1.7 m. vessels with a maximum draft of about 3.55 m can negotiate the bar at highest water and anchor opposite the wharf.
2    Tidal levels. Mean spring range about 1.2 m; mean neap range about 0.6 m. See information in Indian Tide Table.
Arrival information

1	Port operations. Between 16th May and 
14th September the port remains closed.
2    	Outer anchorage. Vessels of deep draught can anchor as far as 5 miles from the harbour entrance.
3    	Pilot and tugs. Vessels are generally piloted in and out by the local pilots during days and night. Port Officer, who is a Licensed Pilot of the Government, renders pilotage service to foreign streamers calling at the port of the anchorage in the open road stead. No tugs are available.
4	Wrecks and Obstructions.	For a distance of about 3.5 miles northwards of the entrance, foul grounds, with rocks above and below water, extends about 1.5 mile offshore. Numerous patches with depth of 2.5 to 3 m over them, lie between 5 .5 miles NW and 03 miles SSW of the entrance. Their position can best be seen on the chart. Pate Rock which lies about 1 ¾ miles westward of the entrance, dries 0.9m and the sea normally breaks over it. A rock 3.7m in height, lies about 03 C NE of Pate rock. 

Harbour

1    General layout. The small berthing area lies about    3 cables NE of the harbour entrance.
2    Storm signals are displayed from a mast standing close N of the harbour entrance by using the brief system.  
Directions

1    	Caution. Gangoli Shoals, an area of foul ground and numerous other rocky patches, with depths from 5.2 to 10 m over them, lie in the outer approaches to the port seaward of the 5 m depth contour. The inner approaches to the port, between W and the coastline N, are encumbered by numerous rocks both drying and above water; these dangers extend up to 2 miles from the coast.
2    Outer anchorages.Vessels approaching the anchorages from South are to be careful of the Dangerous wrecks which lie in the port approaches. 
3	Inner harbour. The surf breaks continuously over the bar during W winds and it is advisable to enter only with the aid of the local pilot; inside the bar there are depths of 6.4 to 8.3 m. A channel, about 1¾cables wide, leads NNE from the harbour entrance to the berth; E of the channel the entire area dries at low water.
Anchorages

1    About 3 miles SW of the harbour entrance, anchorage can be obtained in a depth of 13 m, as shown on the chart; a rocky patch lies close NW of the anchorage.
2    	Small vessels and sailing craft can anchor in the fairly deep water, within the harbour entrance, E of the town of Gangoli (13° 39' N, 74° 40' E).
Streamers call at this port for carrying ore cargo and anchor with the Tippu Sultan Gudda Light house bearing 0460 and Kodi Light bearing 0760 at a distance of about 3.5 mile depending upon their drafts.
Northern approaches to the port are rocky. Extreme care is necessary while approaching Kundapura anchorage as foul ground extend to about 5 ½ miles N.W and 3 miles S.W entrance.
The recommended approach to the anchorage would be from the south. The southern coast of the rocky outcrops, the pare rock is conspicuous and waves break practically at times.

Berth

1   	There is a stone wharf, situated 3 cables NE of the harbour entrance, with a depth of about 1.6 m alongside.
2	Another berth of length 213m with a least depth a alongside 3.5m is also available.
3	Extreme care is necessary while approaching the anchorage for foul ground which extends to about 5.5 miles NW and 3 miles SW of the entrance. Caution is also to be exercised for depths of 1.8m at the entrance to port due to shifting sand bars.
