HONAVAR

1	General information. Honavar port (14° 16'.5 N, 74° 26'.6 E) is located at the place where Sharavati River joins Arabian Sea. The port is near to town of Honavar.

2	Function/Anchorage. The port is not open for any activities, however provides a sound anchorage spot for ocean going steamers. Good anchorage is available at a distance of three miles in depths of 10m from the river mouth. Smaller vessels can be anchored at depth of 6m. The approach to port is easy and safe depths are irregular owing to heavy siltation. The holding ground is sand and mud.

3	Pilotage. Private Pilots are available to assist Tindal to navigate. Ocean going steamers are however piloted into the anchorage by the Port Officer who is also Master Mariner.

4	Landmarks. A conspicuous monument, Colonel Pillar exists in position 140 16’ 30”N, 0740 27’ 10”E.Honavar Lighthouse  (14º 16'.5 N,  74º 26'.6 E) and  another  light  (round  masonry  hut  on a  white   tower,  elevation  7 m)  stands ½ cables SW of the light.

5	Berthing and Wharves. There exists a first stage lighterage wharf 400ft long with a stacking of 69000 sq.ft. Second stage lighterage wharf of 564 ft. long with about 3 lakhs sqft. of stacking area is also available. 

6	Repairs. There are small private workshops with welding and other minor repair facilities for sailing and fishing vessels. There are no dry docks at the port.

8	Communications.	The port is well connected to national highway which is ½ km from the port. Nearest railway station is Karki at a distance of 05 km. 

9	Storm signals are displayed from a flagstaff standing near the S end of the town.
