It consists of granite and, having a white appearance, can be seen 10 miles in clear weather. The passage between this rock and the coast is free of dangers, but vessels using it should keep near the rock, and not proceed into depths of less than 13m. Vessels passing W of this rock at night should not proceed into depths of less than 27m which are found about 2.5 miles W of the rock. A shoal, swept to a depth of 2.8m, lies almost 1 mile offshore W of Tikkotti village. The coast between Kadalur Point and Calicut, about 14.5 miles SSE, is generally low, sandy, and fringed with palms. Red laterite hills back the coast. Quilandi, a large village, lies about 3.8 miles ESE of Kadalur Point. A water tower is conspicuous on the coast, close S of the village. The conspicuous summit of Palkunnu, 297m high, rises about 7.5 miles ESE of the village. A large black rock, with a tree on it, lies on the coast about 2.8 miles SSE of Quilandi. Kadalur Point (11°27'.7N, 75°38'E.), low but prominent, is covered with palm trees over which will be seen a large round tree. Hills gradually rise NE of the point; the nearest summit is 77m high, about 1.3 miles NE of the point. Kadalur Point has been reported to give a good radar response at 22 miles. The coastal reef extends about 1.5 miles W and 1.3 miles S from the point. Trikodi Reef, with a least depth of 1.5m and Kadalur Reef, with a least depth of 1.8m, are the W and SW ends, respectively, of the coastal reef. Koyilandy Fishing Harbour General information. Koyilandy Fishing Harbour (11°4’ N 75°9’ E) is located about 1 Km West of Koyilandy town. It is 8 mile North of Puthiyappa Fishery Harbour and 19 mile South of Chombal Fishery Harbour. The nearest railway station is ‘Koyilandy’ about 2km east of the harbor. Wrecks and Obstructions A PA wreck exists in position 11°33'.00 N 075°33'.90 E which is dangerous to surface navigation. Another wreck with depth above wreck 8.7 m lies about 2 cables WSW of it. Another wreck close to the coast South of Murat River exists in position 11°33'.71 N, 75°35'.33 E which is dangerous to surface navigation with a vertical clearance of .3 m. Elattur Cape (11°19'N., 75°44'E.), about 4 miles farther SSE, is low and rocky, with coconut palms close inland. The mouth of Elattur River, a shallow and rocky river, lies about 1.3 miles N of the cape. Puthiyappa Fishing Harbour General information. Puthiyappa (11° 19’’ N 75° 44’’ E) is situated to the North of Kozhikode city, 3 Nm away. The natural bay at Puthiyappa is formed due to the protrusion of land into the sea. This protrusion offers natural protection to the mechanised fishing vessels from Northern side but it fails to provide protection from the waves approaching from South and West. However to offer protection to the fishing vessels throughout the year southern and western breakwaters are constructed. CALICUT (KOZHIKODE) General information Calicut (11º 15' N, 075º 46' E), also known as Kozhikode, stands on the N bank of the Kallayi River near its mouth. Calicut was the first port in India to be visited by Europeans when the Portuguese Vasco da Gama landed here in 1498. Now it is one of the largest city of the State of Kerala. Function. No activity is undertaken at present by the port. The port had two piers which was used by lighters, however presently this two piers are destroyed and is nonoperational. Tidal levels. Mean spring range about 1.0 m; mean neap range about 0.4 m. Anchorage. Anchorage may be obtained with Calicut Lighthouse bearing 078º at a distance according to vessels draught. Vessels should not anchor S of this bearing as the bottom is rocky. There are three recommended anchorages shown on the chart. With local knowledge small vessels can anchor S and E of Coote Reef in depths of about 3 m, soft mud; the reef affords protection from NW. BEYPORE General information The port of Beypore (110 09’.09 N, 0750 48’.05 E) is located midway between two major ports, Kochi and New Mangalore. It is situated at the mouth of Beypore/Chaliyar River. Presently Beypore harbour can take only barges or small sea going vessels (limited to 2000 DWT) as the available water depth is about 3.5m. At present capital dredging is going on to make the depth to 5.0m. Approach and entry. The river mouth is approached between two breakwaters which extend SW from the N and S entrance points as shown on the chart The approach channel is of 180 m width and 3.5m deep. Limiting conditions Depth. There are no charted dangers seawards of the 30 m depth contour. The bar of Beypore River is having a least charted depth of 3.5m between the breakwaters however, the Port Conservator should be consulted for the latest information on depths. Tidal levels. Mean spring range about 0.9 m; mean neap range about 0.3 m. See information in Tide Tables. During low waters, sea water colour changes from pale green to brownish from the mouth of Beypore River and extends up to 4-5 NM in seaward direction. During high waters, sea water colour again changes from brownish to pale green as discoloration recedes to Beypore river mouth. Current/drift is less than 1-2Knots during the month of Sep to Nov. Local weather. At low water a NW wind makes crossing the bar unsafe. Arrival Information Anchorage. Anchorage may be obtained in 6m, about 1.3 miles WSW of the flagstaff; moderate sized vessels usually anchor in 8.5m, about 5 cables farther WSW. Large vessels anchor farther out according to draught. During the month of Sep – Nov winds are generally from south westerly directions with an average speed 6-8 Knots. Weather remains fair and ideal for anchoring. Tidal stream follow north easterly direction. Thick layer of soft mud in the sea bed provide excellent holding ground for anchorage. Pilotage. Pilotage is compulsory for all merchant vessels. Beypore port channel monitors MMB channel 16 and pilot is available on MMB channel 12. Generally passenger ships having a draught of 2 – 3m enter the channel. Harbour information Storm signals are displayed from the signal station; the general system is used. Landmark. Beypore Lighthouse (11º 09'.4 N, 75º 48'.4 E) Major light. Beypore Light-as above. Directions Caution. Fishing stakes or poles may be encountered in the approaches to the breakwaters and within the harbour. Vessels approaching from S should pass W of Black Rocks which lie towards the SE end of a reef that extends about 8 cables S of the river entrance. A rock with a depth of 1.5 m over it lies 5 cables SSW of Black Rocks. At night vessels should not enter depths of less than 15 m. Useful marks: Pillar (6 m in height) (11º 07' N, 75º 50' E).
