Chart 308.
Outer Approaches to Visakhapatnam

	1.	The coast from Visakhapatnam to Waltair Point (17º 44´ N, 83º 21´E), 3½ miles NE, is low and sandy; foul 		grounds lie throughout the coast extending up to ½ cable offshore. The area is reasonably vegetated with palm trees. 		Heavy breakers are encountered. There are several beach fronts which extend from the North Break Water of the fishing 		harbour to Bheemunipatnam.
		Rama Krishna Beach(RK Beach) is the portion which is 2 miles from the N breakwater of the fishing harbour to 	East point.
	2.	The Coast Submarine Museum A submarine is beached on the beach front between the Harbour and the disused East 		point Light. The submarine is conspicuous from the offing.
	3.	Disused East Point Light House: There is a Old and disused Light house which is conspicuous from the Sea NE of 	Visakhapatnam Harbour along the beach.Lawson’s bay is situated near the Naval transmission station and on the sea 		shore of Visakhapatnam.
	4.	Waltair, a residential suburb of Visakhapatnam, lies on a range of low hills facing the sea 2½ miles NE of 		Visakhapatnam town.
	5.	Waltair Point (17º 44'N, 83º 21'E) is low and sandy with rocky foreshore fronting red sandhills which 		sometimes show up well from the offing. 
	6.	The following conspicuous objects are visible from a distance of 3NM on the Rama Krishna Beach.NCB Water Tower 	(17°42'.21N, 83°18'.54E) and FM Tower(17°43'.05N, 83°19'.20E).

2.1712
	1.	Submarine Exercise Area, in which submarines frequently exercise, lies with its center about 18 miles ENE of 		Waltair Point. A good lookout should be  maintained while operating in the vicinity.
	2.	Caution. Vessels should keep well clear of foul ground lying 1½ mile E of East Point Light-tower.Vessels 		should not anchor in foul ground, which surrounds Waltair Point within a depth of 15m.
	3.	Rushi Hill is a 150m high, round topped conspicuous hillock. It is surmounted by a beacon 5m in height. It 		stands 3 ¾ miles NE of Waltair Point.
	4.	Kailasa Giri, 506 m high hill about 5.3 miles NE of Waltair Point.The hill has a very prominent statue of 		Hindu Gods Siva and Parvati which is very conspicuous from the sea when the visibility is good.
	5.	River Pedda Gedda flows in to the seas 4 miles up the coast NE of Rushi Hill Beacon.

	1.	Bheemunipatnamlies to the north of Visakhapatnam and is boarded by Rushikonda to the south and Bay of Bengal 		to the east.The Bheemunipatnammunicipality was merged into greater VisakhapatnamMuncipalCorporation. Bheemunipatnam 		Portis no longer functional and the port office is abandoned.It lies on the SW side of Gostani River, the entrance to 		which almost dries but is used by local boats.
	2.	Divi’s Pier.  The Pier is about 380m and connects to a private road built by the Divi’s Laboratories Limited, 		Visakhapatnam. The pier was built to draw water from the sea for extracting minerals and is presently in a disused 		condition.
	3.	Laxmi Narsimha Swami Temple, painted white halfway up the E top of the hill shows up well with the sun shining 	on it.
	4.	A Chimney53m high, of a factory at Chittivalasa 2 ½ miles NNW of the town, is also a good mark..

	5.	Bheemunipatnam Light (17°53'.445 N,83°27'.349 E) is exhibited from a white masonry tower, 11m high, near the 		port office at the NE end of the town close to shore, 7 cables E of the beacon described earlier.

Anchorage
2.1734
	1.	Anchorage may be obtained 1 mile offshore in depths of about 12m, sand and mud with good holding ground which 		is more sheltered than at adjacent ports. During the SW monsoon a vessel should anchor with the lighthouse bearing 		264º; during the NE monsoon she should anchor with the lighthouse bearing between 249º-259º.Tidal Stream is scarcely 		perceptible.
	2.	Conspicuous Objects:
		New Water tank (17º52'.43 N,83º24'.92 E)
		Old Water tank (17º51'.98 N,83º24'.98 E) 
		Flag Staff (17º51'.70 N,83º25'.20 E) 
		Laxmi Narsimha Temple(17º53'.32 N,83º26'.95E) 
		Light House (17º53'.43 N, 83º27'.35 E)
		New Temple (17°53'.112 N, 83°27'.046)
	3.	Anchorage may be obtained off the mouth of the river in depths of about 10m, being sandy. The coast from 		Konada to Chintapalle, 5 miles NE, continues to be sandy with rocks extending from ¼ mile offshore.
	4.	Chintapalli Light (18º 03'.9N, 83º 38'.4E) is exhibited from a white circular masonry tower, with black bands, 	22m in height, from a position 5 miles NE of Konada.
	5.	Chintapalli (Santhapalli) Rocks with least depth of 1.5m, lie about 6 miles SE of Chintapalli Lighthouse. In 		good weather sea does not break on these rocks nor is there any discoloured appearance over them, but the sea breaks 		heavily with a moderate swell. Two dangerous wrecks lies close N of Santapille.
	6.	Boat Entrance. The entrance of the breakwater lies N of Bheemunipatnam Lighthouse. The controlling depth over 		the bar is 0.6m. Boats can pass through the entrance only at certain stages of tide.
	7.	Landing, can be effected on the beach between the entrance to the breakwater and the port office  
	8.	Chintapalli , Town lies 1 mile NE of Chintapalli (Santapalle) light tower.
	9.	Kandivalssa (SantapalliPeak), 537m high, the highest and most prominent peak in the vicinity stands 5.3 miles 		NW of Chintapalli Light-tower, it appears nearly conical on all bearings from seaward. The summit of an isolated, bare 	and red double-peaked hill, 117m high, stands 1¾ miles N of Chintapalli Light tower. This summit in line with 			Kandivalssa already described, bearing 304º leads E -of Chintapalli Rocks. The channel between Chintapalli Rocks may 		be taken during day light. At night vessel should keep in the depths of over 37m when Santapille light bears between 		322º and 290º.

	1.	Between Gostani River and Konada, a village 10 miles NE, the coast is sandy and broken about midway by some 		red rocks from about 6 to 12m high, which stand out well when seen from the sea. Between these cliffs and Konada the 		beach is fronted by rocks extending about ¼ mile offshore.
	2.	Amnam, a prominent flat-topped hill 254m high, smooth and bare, stands 3¾ miles NNE of 	Bhimunipatnam 	Lighthouse.
	3.	Konada. (18º 01' N, 83º 34'E), a village, lies near the mouth of Champavati River; several white buildings and 	some coconut palms stand on the NE side of the river.
	5.	Champavati River. The river mouth lies near Konada village, Pusapatirega mandal, Vijayanagar district. There 		are no berthing facilities available at the river mouth; boats are secured on the bank of the river using wooden stag 		horns. However the village nearby is well administrated with local government, but the transport services to the 		village are very few in number and less frequently available. Primary school and Primary Medical Centres are available 	in the village. Fishing is the main source of income for the people living in the village.
