CHART 218 Kasargod to Tellicherry General information Route 1 The route leads 25 miles NW from a position WSW of Tellicherry to a position SW of Mount Dilli. Topography 1 The coastline is generally sandy and fringed with coconut palms except between Tellicherry (11°44'.90N, 75°29'.13E) and Cannanore (Kannur), 9 miles NW, where it is consist of sandy beaches and alternate cliffs. There are numerous above and below-water rocks, lying close offshore, in several places along this stretch of coastline. The coast is backed by undulating hills, with elevations from 30 to 120 m, which rise inland to the remarkable and lofty peaks of the Kundah Hills; many of the peaks are prominent and their positions are shown on the chart. Depths 1 Two dangerous wrecks lie seaward of the 30 m depth contour. One dangerous wreck in position 11°40'.06N, 75°23'.94E and another one in position 11°57'.82N, 75°13'.50E. Currents 1 The currents have a seasonal variation related to the monsoon, from February until September the most frequent set is SE with the greatest constancy during June to August; during October currents are variable in direction, thereafter from November until January the most common set is NW. The rate is mostly less than 1 kts but at times 2 kts may occur, usually during July, August and December. Exceptionally, the current has a significant onshore component. Principal marks 1 Landmarks. Tellicherry (Thalassery) south boundary pillar (11°42'.96N, 75°31'.04E). Flagstaff (11°44'.75N, 75°29'.53E). Club house (11°45'.72N, 75°28'.21E). Redoubt (ruined, 61 m in height) (11°46'.80N, 75°28'.20E), the ruins stands on a bare hill about 6 cables NE of Dharmadam. Casuarina Trees (11°50'.99N, 75°24'.19E), a clump of Casuarina trees stand on low hills 1¾ miles E of Fort Saint Angelo. Kannur Lighthouse (11°51'.63N, 75°21'.36E). North Point (11°54'.37N, 75°19'.15E), a headland. Kotte Kunnu lighthouse (Mount Dilli) (12°00'.43N, 75°12'.12E). 2 Major lights. Kadalur Point Lighthouse. Kannur Lighthouse. Directions The route leads about 25 miles NW from a position WSW of tellicherry to a position SW of Mount Dilli, passing: SW of Kurchikallu Rock (11°42'.90N, 75°30'.50E), which lies about 7 cables SSE of Talayi Rock, the rocks have depths over them of 0.9 and 1.5 m respectively. A buoy (black, spherical) moored on the S side of Talayi Rock is removed during the SW monsoon. Then to: Clear of a dangerous wreck (mast) (11°40'.06N, 75°23'.94E), position approximate. Then to: SW of Nakudiankallu (11°45'.39N, 75°27'.81E), a drying rock which lies close NW of Bilikallu and Shorukallu basalt ridges. Then to: SW of Green Island (21 m in height) (11°46'.20N, 75°27'.02E), an islet covered with tall trees which lies close off the W point of Dharmapattanam Island. Then to: Clear of a dangerous wreck (11°57'.82N, 75°13'.50E), then to: To a position SW of Mount Dilli (12°01'.70N, 75°12'.14E), which is the summit of a conspicuous headland that is separated by a narrow creek from the low-lying mainland. Kotte Kunnu lighthouse stands close to it. Useful marks 1 Mahe Lighthouse (white mast, masonry base, 13 m in height) (11°42'.13N, 75°31'.80E) 2 Thalassery lighthouse (disused) (white, squat, masonry tower) (11°44'.90N, 75°29'.15E)); it stands on the NW bastion of a fort which was built in 1708. 3 Chimney (43 m in height) (11°51'.60N, 75°21'.62E). 4 Azhikkal Light house (11°56'.54N, 75°18'.14E). Thalai Fishing Harbour 1 General information. Thalai fishing harbour (11º43'.91N 75º30'.00 E). The harbour is 2 mile south of Thalassery town and very close to NH 17. Nearest railway station is at Thalassery, which is 3 km away from the site. TELLICHERRY (THALESSERY) General information 1 Position. Tellicherry (Thalassery) ( 11º 45' N, 075º 29' E), is an open roadstead port situated 24 miles SE of Mount Dilli; the town of that name, backed by hills which are thickly covered with coconut palms and other trees, lies about 1 mile inland. 2 Function. No activity is undertaken at present by the port. 3 Port authority. The port is in charge of a Port Conservator, subordinate to the Port Officer at Beypore. Contact number: 0490-2320012. Email: portconservatorpotly@gmail.com. Tidal levels 1 Mean spring range about 1.0 m; mean neap range about 0.6 m. See information in Tide Tables. Anchorages 1 Anchorage for large vessels in unsettled weather is well offshore in depths of 12 m but in good weather a vessel can anchor in 9 m, soft mud, about 2 miles WSW of Nilot Point (11º 44' N, 75º 30' E), as shown on the chart. Small craft 1 Small craft can anchor NW of Thalai, a village situated 1½ miles SE of NilotPoint (11º44'N, 75º 30' E), vessels using this anchorage must pass S of Thalai Rock (11º 43' N, 75º 30' E), local knowledge is desirable. MOUNT DILLI TO KASARAGOD General information Route 1 The route leads about 32 miles NNW from a position SW of Mount Dilli (12°01'.70N, 75°12'.14E) to a position WSW of Kasargod (12°29'.80N, 74°59'.50E). Topography 1 The Coast fringed with coconut trees are broken in several places by the mouth of a river or a prominent headland. Kavvayi Backwater, lying close within the coast, extends from a position abreast the NW slopes of Mount Dilli NNW for about 11 miles to the confluence of Ariakaduva and Nileswaram Rivers. Depths 1 Except a dangerous wreck in position 12°29'.36N, 74°53'.41E, there are no charted dangers seawards up to 30 m depth contour in this section. Principal marks 1 Landmarks: Kotte Kunnu lighthouse (12°00'.43N, 75°12'.11E) Wreck (12°01'.92N, 75°11'.13E), which stranded in 1979. Hosdrug Fort (ruined, 37 m in height) (12°18'.60N, 75°05'.60E). Bekal Fort (36 m in height) (12°23'.50N, 75°00'.02E), an old fort with a tall central bastion. Palm Clump (46 m in height) (12°26'.98N, 75°00'.17E). Passage 1 The route leads about 32 miles NNW from a position SW of Mount Dilli (12°01'.70N, 75°12'.14E) (5.175) to a position WSW of Kasargod (12°29'.80N, 74°59'.50E), passing: 2 Clear of a dangerous wreck (depth 9.5 m) (12°29'.36N, 74°53'.41E). Useful marks 1 Hosdrug Fort (ruined, 37 m in height) (12°18'.60 N, 75°05'.60 E). 2 Manjampadi (12°20'.37 N, 75°07'06 E), a bare hill. 3 Bekal Fort (12°23'.50 N, 75°00'.02 E) . Fishing Harbours and Anchorages Cheruvathoor Fishing Harbour 1 General information. Cheruvathoor (11o12' N and longitude is 75o07' E.) is one of the important fishing centres in Kasargod District of Kerala State, with extensive fishing activity involving mechanized trawlers and motorized crafts. The area is located at about 1 mile west of Cheruvathoor town. In this harbor a quay of 120 is protected by two breakwaters. Bekal 1 General information. Bekal (12°23'.57N, 75°02'.00E) is a small open port for local craft formed by a rocky promontory, which may be identified by a rest house situated at its foot. 2 Caution. A rocky area (1 m in height) lies about 1½ miles NE of Bekal Fort. Kasaragod 1 General information. Kasaragod (12°29'.80N, 74°59'.50E), a small town lies on the N side of the entrance to the Chandragiri River. No activity is undertaken presently by the port. 2 Port Authority. Near the mouth of Chandragiri River, two posts each of 6 m in height and surmounted by a white ball are erected periodically, they serve to mark the N and S limits of the port. During the SW monsoon these posts are removed. 5 Landmarks: Kasaragod Light Chimney Fort (ruined, 41 m in height) (12°28'.20N, 74°00'.19E). 6 Major lights. Kasaragod Light. 7 Anchorage may be found in a depth of about 10 m, soft mud, with Kasaragod lighthouse bearing 022°, distant 2¼ mile, as shown on the chart. Kasaragod Fishing Harbour 1 General information. Kasaragod Fishing Harbour is on the estuary of Chandragiri River and the backwaters, which is about 1Nm from the Kasargod town. The harbor is a newly constructed one which is protected by two breakwaters. Small Craft Rivers 1 Turutti River (12°12'.05 N, 75°07'.22 E), the entrance to the Ariakaduva & Nileswaram Rivers and Kavvayi Backwater, is navigable only by small craft with local knowledge. 2 Chandragiri River passes S of the town of Kasaragod and enters the sea between the two hill forts at Chandragiri (12°27.89' N, 74°59'.74 E) and Kasaragod 1½ miles NNW. The river bar dries and is very changeable; it can only be crossed by small craft during high water.
