Chart 217 Kasaragod to New Mangalore The route leads about 29 miles NNW from a position WSW of Kasaragod (12°29'.80N, 74°59'.50E) to a position WSW of New Mangalore. Topography The coastline presents a fringe of coconut trees broken in several places by the mouth of a river or a prominent headland. While on offshore, numerous isolated rocks lie within 5 cables of the coast. Depths Several wrecks are lying seaward of the 30 m depth contour along this stretch of the coast. Mariners need to be very careful while navigating on this coast. Principal marks Landmarks. Chimney (12°29'.21N, 74°59'.30E). Pasavadigumpa Mala (323 m in height) (12°40'.35N, 75°01'.35E), a sloping mountain with a flattish summit. New Mangalore to Malpe Route The route leads 29 miles NNW from a position WSW of New Mangalore (12° 56' N, 74° 49' E) to a position W of Malpe. Topography The coastline is almost straight and fringed with the coconut trees. Inland, Kudremukh (13° 08' N, 75° 15' E) the highest peak on this stretch of coast dominates the background; another mountain, Valkunji 1039 m high and shaped like a buffalo's hump, stands 16 miles NW. Currents The currents are of monsoonal origin, but tend to follow the trend of the coast. In December and January, sets are NW with rates up to 1 kts. In July and August when the SW Monsoon is well established, SE sets with rates up to 2 kts are experienced. Exceptionally, onshore sets up to 1.5 kts are experienced during the NE Monsoon and up to 3 kts during the SW Monsoon. Principal marks Landmarks: Konaje Kallu (13° 05' N, 75° 03' E). Water tower (13° 21' N, 74° 42' E). Entrance Rock (13° 21' N, 74° 41' E). Major lights: Suratkal Point Light (white square masonry tower, red bands, 36 m in height) (13° 00'.2 N, 74° 47'.44 E). Kap Light (white masonry tower, black bands, 27 m in height) (13° 13' N, 74° 44' E), stands on a rock near the shore; the ruins of Kap Battery stand nearby on the coast. Saint Mary Isles Light (white square masonry tower, elevation 28 m) (13° 21' N, 74° 41' E), stands on the summit of North Island. Directions Cautions Vessels should pass well clear of the dangerous wrecks, whose positions are shown on the chart, lying between the 5 m and 30 m depth contours from New Mangalore to Malpe. At night vessels in the vicinity of Mulki Rocks should keep in depths not less than 24 m. 2Vessels in the vicinity of Outer Rocks or Black Rocks should keep in depths not less than about 15 m by day or 22 m by night. 1.The route leads 29 miles NNW from a position WSW of New Mangalore (12° 56' N, 74° 49' E) to a position W of Malpe, passing WSW of a rock (½ miles SSE), with other rocks lying ½miles N and 8 cables S. Then to: 2.WSW of a shoal patch (2½ miles SW), then to: Clear of Mulki Rocks (4 miles WSW), a group of above and below-water black basalt rocks. Then to: WSW of Kap Rock (1½ miles NW) and the rocky shoal extending 1¼ miles SW of it. Then to: 3.WSW of Outer Rocks (3½ miles NW); with Black Rocks, a group of four above water rocks, lying 1 mile NNE. Then to: WSW of Saint Mary Isles (8 miles NNW), and: 4.To a position WSW of Coconut Island (10 miles NNW), the island is mostly covered with trees and it is surrounded by foul ground extending about 7 cables WNW to a rock which dries. MALPE TO COONDAPOOR(KUNDAPURA) General information Route The route leads 18 miles N from a position W of Malpe(13° 2l' N, 74° 42' E) to a position W of Coondapoor (Kundapoor). Topography The coastline is flat, straight and sandy. It is fringed by coconut trees and broken only by the mouths of rivers; the hinterland consists of low hills. The Western Ghats extend roughly parallel with the coast about 20 miles inland. Depths There are no charted dangers seawards of the 20 m depth contour. .
