Chart 214 Vengurla to Betul General information Route 7.20 The route leads 25 miles NNW from a position WSW of Terekhol River (15°43'.15N, 73°41'.14E) to a position WSW of Malvan Bay. Topography 7.21 This stretch of coast is in the form of shallow bights within which, there are rocky capes and sandy bays intersected by creeks and rivers. Depths 7.22 There are no charted dangers seawards of the 30 m depth contour; however, an area of foul ground exists in position 15°40'.05N, 73°29'.95E. Tidal streams 7.23 The in-going tidal stream sets N and the out-going stream sets S between Vengurla Roads (15°50'.11N,73°36'.19E) and Chaldea Rock, 9 miles NW, with a spring rate of about 1 kts. Overfalls 7. 24 Sudden overfalls may occur between the S end of Vengurla Rocks (15°53'.50N, 73°28'.00E) and Malvan Rock, 9 miles N, except at the N end of Karil Kachal Channel. Currents 7.25 See 7.6. Principal marks 7.26 Landmark. Radio tower (R Lts, 242 m in height) (16°04'.48N, 73°33'.07E). Chimney (33 m in height) (15°33'.72N, 73°44'.74E), stands at Baga Point. Major lights. Aguada Light (15°29'.52N, 73°46'.36E) Vengurla Point Light (15°51'.32N, 73°36'.89E) Vengurla Rocks Light (white metal tower, red bands, 20 m in height) (15°53'.57N, 73°27'.75E) stands on the NW point of an unnamed islet; the light is obscured on some bearings by islets nearby. A disused lighthouse (31 m in height) stands on an islet 3 cables W of Vengurla Rocks Lighthouse. Devgarh Light (16°23'.33N, 73°22'.32E) Other navigational aids 7.27 Racon: Aguada Light Vengurla Rocks Light AIS: Aguada Light Vengurla Point Light Devgarh Light Directions Outer route (W of Vengurla Rocks) 7.28 Caution. Vessels should keep in depths of more than 20 m by day and 30 m at night between Chaldea Rock and Malvan Rock, 5 miles NNW. The buoy about 4 cables WSW of Chaldea rock are only in position between October to May. 2 Passage. The route leads 25 miles NNW from a position WSW of Terekhol River (15°43'.15N, 73°41'.14E) to a position WSW of Malvan Bay, passing, WSW of Havelock Rock (15°43'.25N, 73°39'.69E), a sharp pinnacle awash with another rock, also awash, 4 cables NE and 1½ cable SW. Then to WSW of Redi Rock (12 m in height) (15°43'.86N, 73°38'.92E), and clear of the islets, rocks and drying reefs lying off Redi Point, about 1 mile NNW. 3 Then to WSW of a dangerous wreck (position approximate) (15°46'.00N, 73°37'.00E), then to WSW of Rocks (Burnt Islands) (15°53'.57N, 73°27'.75E); lying between Tapti Rock and Karil Rock situated, respectively, near the S and N ends of the area of foul ground. Then to WSW of Square Rock (12 m in height) (15°59'.24N, 73°27'.37E) with rocks lying SSW and NNE of it and foul ground extending E to the coast. Then to WSW of Malvan Rock (16°01'.78N, 73°26'.07E), with a swept depth of 2.5 m over it. Mandel Rock (6 m in height), with numerous detached shoals and rocks, lies about 1½ miles ESE of Malvan Rock. Then to a position WSW of Malvan Bay. Clearing bearing. Between Niuti Fort and Malvan Bay, Vengurla Rocks Light bearing less than 158° clears of the offshore dangers. Inner route (Karil Kachal Channel) 7. 29 Caution. Do not use this channel in the night, but pass W of Vengurla Rocks. Passage. Small craft, intending to proceed through Karil Kachal Channel, from the vicinity of Vengurla Roads (15°50'.11N,73°36'.19E) should steer to pass (with positions from Vengurla Point (15° 51' N, 73° 37' E): E of Vengurla Rock (15°53'.57N, 73°27'.75E) and the foul ground extending about 3 miles N of it. Then to SW of Bhubra Rock (15°56'.09N, 73°30'.59E), a rock awash lying 3½ cables SW of Niuti Fort (ruin); the rock is marked by a buoy (black, can) moored close off its SSW side during the fine weather season (October to May), the position of the buoy is not reliable. Follow the moderate depth channel between Karil Rock (13 m in height) (15°56'.00N, 73°27'.85E) and Chaldea Rock (15°57'.16N, 73°28'.27E), 1¼ miles NNE; the latter rock, which is awash and lies near the S end of foul ground extending to the shore NNE, is marked by a buoy (black, conical) moored about 3½ cables WSW of it during the fine weather season (October to May). A line of bearing 093° astern, of Niuti Fort, leads through the channel. And thereafter, As described in the outer route above. Useful marks 7.30 Near the North bank of Terekhol River, Terekhol Fort (22 m in height) (15°43'.28N, 73°41'.18E) stands on the brow of a hill. Redi Fort (ruined, 35 m in height) (15°45'.17N, 73°39'.94E) stands at 1 mile ENE of the flat rocky projection of Redi Point. Machlimar Point (15°48'.35N, 73°38'.70E), with a small hill, which rises about 1 mile NNW of the entrance to Talavda River. Wagh-giri (Tiger Hill) (316 m in height) (15°52'.85N, 73°41'.94E). Parule Hill (158 m in height) (15°58'.32N, 73°30'.78E) standing 2 miles N of Niuti Fort is prominent. Sindhudrug Janjira Light (16°02'.47N, 73°27'.43E) Port Redi General information 7.31 Position. Redi Port (15°44'.50N, 73°34'.22E), 47 mile N of Goa, stands on the S side of a shallow creek about 2 miles NNW of the entrance to the Terekhol River. It is well known iron ore mining town. Function. The port is a private port which is planned to be developed into all weather, multi-commodity port. Presently the port is used by barges and lighters to transport iron ore from jetty to the vessels at anchorage. The iron ore is mainly exported to China and Singapore. The port is an open roadstead port used by vessels loading iron ore from self-propelled lighters. The port is closed during the SW monsoon from mid-May to mid-September. Traffic. About 15 vessels calls the port and around one million metric tons of iron ore is exported yearly. Port authority. Vessels are required to send their ETA through E-mail or fax 72 hours in advance to Redi Port Head Office at Mumbai or fax to the port directly. Pilotage is compulsory and carried out by the Port Officer in day light hours only. The pilot boards in the general anchorage and conducts vessels to a loading anchorage. The port office is manned 24X7 and available on Ch 16. Channel 15 is used as working frequency of the port. Harbour information 7.33 General layout. There are two lighter jetties at Redi Point situated W of the town. The general depth in the harbour is about 2 m. The harbour is protected from N winds and currents by cliffs and islands which almost surround it. Development. There are plans to convert the port from a barge orientated port to one which will accommodate vessels of up to 60 000 dwt at alongside berths. Landmark. Redi Fort (15°45'.17N, 73°39'.94E) Anchorages 7.34 General anchorage. Vessels can obtain anchorage in the general anchorage area about 2 miles W of Redi Point, in a depth of 13 m, mud; as shown on the chart. Loading anchorages. Jetty One and jetty two are the two anchorages situated NW and SW of Redi Point; at these anchorages, vessels with a draught of up to10.4 m can load safely. Port services 7. 35 Facilities. The port is providing all infrastructure facilities to exporters and is ISPS compliant. First aid facilities are available at the port. Hospital facility is available only at Vengurla, 14 km N. 2. Additional Information. Redi is connected to nearest national highway NH-17. The nearest airport is at Goa around 70 Kms and the nearest railhead is Sawantwadi road which is located around 25 Kms. Nearest Airport - Dabolim Airport (80 km) Vengurla General information 7.36 Position. The town of Vengurla lies about 7 cables NE of Vengurla Point (15°51'.22N, 73°37'.02E). Function. Vengurla is an open roadstead port with vessels anchoring S and SW of Vengurla Point in Vengurla Roads. Presently the port is used only by fishing vessels. Tidal information 7.37 Tidal levels. Mean spring range about 1.5 m; mean neap range about 0.8 m. Harbour information 7.38 Storm signals are displayed from a mast on the signal station at Vengurla Point by using the brief system.. A small jetty of 15 m is available in the port. Offshore dangers. South Rock (15°50'.79N, 73°36'.94E) lies close NE of a 4.8 m shoal; a buoy (black, conical) is moored 2 cables NE of these dangers. East Rock (15°50'.92N, 73°37'.22E) is marked by buoys (black, conical) moored close NE and SW. South West Point Rock (15°51'.18N, 73°38'.72E) is marked by a buoy (red, can) moored close WSW. A shoal patch (15°51'.00N, 73°37'.00E) with a depth of 4.9 m, is unmarked and unnamed. Another shoal patch with 4.9 m depth lies about 1½ cables NE of it. Caution. The buoys off Vengurla are only in position between October and May. Landmarks. Vengurla Point Light (white 6-sided masonry tower, black bands, 13 m in height) (15°51'.32N, 73°36'.89E). Radio Tower (15°51'.65N, 73°37'.00E). Anchorages 7.39 Large vessels can anchor in 10m, with the flagstaff on Vengurla Point bearing 036°, distant about 1¼ mile, as shown on the chart; or closer inshore, in similar depths on the same bearing with the flagstaff distant about 0.4 mile. Small vessels with local knowledge can anchor in about 4.6m in the bight on the E side of Vengurla Point. The town of Malvan (16°03'.40N, 73°27'.70E) stands on the N side of Malvan Bay, it is almost hidden from view by coconut palms. Function. It is an open roadstead port. The port is more used nowadays for tourism related water sports activities viz; scuba diving and parasailing. Limiting conditions 7.42 Depths. The entrance is much encumbered by rocky shoals and the bay is accessible to shallow draught vessels only during good weather. Tidal levels. See information in Tide Tables. Mean spring range about 1.5 m; mean neap range about 0.7 m. Harbour information 7.43 Offshore dangers. Johnston Castle Rock (16°02'.73N, 73°27'.26E), a rocky shoal.Rajkot Rock (16°02'.88N, 73°27'.41E), a rocky shoal lying with a depth of 3.3 m over it close NNW of the fairway.Perch Rock (16°02'.89N, 73°27'.57E), an isolated rock with a depth of 1.6 m over it lies close NNW of the fairway, it is unmarked. Storm signals are displayed from the flagstaff using the brief system. Directions 7.44 The alignment (075.7°) of the leading lights at the head of Malvan Bay leads through the fairway to the head of the bay: Front light (white mast, 4 m in height) (16°03'.08N, 73°28'.15E). Rear light (white mast, 14 m in height) (16°03'.11N, 73°28'.28E). Caution. The rear mark is obscured by palm trees during day time; at night, the rear light is hooded in certain sectors due to developments and construction of building in the area. The lights are shown from 16th September to 15th June when the weather permits. A tower, surmounted by a white cross is standing close S of the leading lights aids identification of the transit. Vessels entering Malvan Bay should maintain the leading line in order to keep clear of the foul ground which, in addition to the named dangers described above, lies both N and S of the fairway, as shown on the chart. There is a depth of 3.6m charted on the centerline of the fairway. Useful marks: Sindhudrug Janjira Light (16°02'.47N, 73°27'.43E) is exhibited from 01st September to 31st May at the W end of Sindhudrug Janjira, a fortified island, situated on the S side of the entrance to the bay. Padmagarh Fort (ruined) (16°02'.78N, 73°27'.88E), lies about 2½ cables NEof Sindhudrug Janjira Fort. A flagstaff (23 m in height) (16°03'.22N, 73°27'.51E), stands at the Rajkot fort. Anchorages and berth 7.45 Vessels can anchor off the entrance to Malvan Bay in 15m, mud, with the N end of Sindhudrug Janjira bearing 095°, about 1 mile, as shown on the chart. Shallow draft vessels can anchor in the bay in depths of 4m, sand, on the range line, with Padmagarh Fort, bearing 163°. Berth. The jetty is located about 3½ cables NW from the front leading light. It is about 30 m in length. Vessels up to 1m in draught can come alongside during high water. E-mail-povengurlammb@gmail.com Coastal anchorages 7.47 Havelock Rock (15°43'.25N, 73°39'.69), as shown on the chart, anchorage may be found about 8½ cables SE of the rock in a depth of about 9 m, mud. Vengurla Rock (15°53'.57N, 73°27'.75E), as shown on the chart, anchorage with shelter from NW winds may be obtained 1mile ESE of the S end of the rock in depths of about 21 m, mud. A shoal patch of 8.4 m lies 7½ cables S of the rock. Rivers 7.48 Terekhol River (15°43'.15N, 73°41'.14), which is entered 2½ miles SE of Redi Port, is fronted by a bar with a least charted depth of 1.4 m but this is subject to change. Karli River (15°57'.50N, 73°30'.00E), which is entered 1½ miles NNW of Niuti Fort can only be used by small boats.
