KUNDAPURA TO BADAGARA – 258 (INT 7348) BEYPORE TO BADAGARA General information Chart 219, 2053 Route 5.130 1 The route leads 28 miles WNW from a position WSW of Beypore (11°09'.48N, 75°47'.76E) to a position WSW of Badagara (Vatakara) (11°34'.2N, 75°36'.2E). Topography 5.131 1 The coastline is slightly indented with bays, interspersed with rocky outcrops and headlands. The coast in vicinity is generally low, sandy and fringed by palms with red laterite hills in the background. To the E and N of Quilandi (11°26'.13N, 75°41'.41E) the hinterland is hilly and undulating. A sea wall has been constructed from close SW of Beypore lighthouse to a position 4 miles NNW of Kadalur Point lighthouse. Depths 5.132 1 There are no charted dangers seawards of the 30 m depth contour. Principal marks 5.133 Landmarks: 1 Vavul Mala (11°25'.66N, 76°07'.90E), the highest mountain of the Kundah Hills, is visible far to seaward in clear weather. The Kundah Hills end rather abruptly S of this mountain. 2 Dome of the Roman Catholic Cathedral (44 m in height) (11°15'.19N, 75°46'.45E) stands about 4½ cables SE of Kozhikode Lighthouse. 3 Radio mast (127 m in height) (11°18'.19N, 75°45'.85E), red obstruction lights are exhibited. 4 Pukkunnu (11°24'.41N, 75°48'.94E), a hill with a conspicuous summit. 5 Kadalur Point Lighthouse (white round masonry tower, black bands, 34m in height) (11°28'.15N, 75°38'.24E 6 Flat Topped Hill (11°36'.94N, 75°37'.79E) situated about 3 miles ENE of Vatakara. Seamark 5.134 1 Sacrifice Rock (11°29'.59N, 75°31'.76E) standing 6½ miles WNW of Kadalur Point is granite Rock with a white appearance. Major lights 5.135 1 Beypore Light. 2 Kadalur Point Light. Directions 5.136 1 The route leads 28 miles NNW from a position WSW of Beypore to a position WSW of Vatakara, passing Clear of a dangerous wreck (17 miles SSE), then to: WSW of Gillham Rock (14 miles SSE), then to: 2 Depending on draught WSW of Calicut Reefs (13 miles SSE), a group of rocky shoals. Then to: 3 WSW of Coote Reef (12 miles SSE), which is marked by a buoy (black and white striped, can) moored 3½ cables W of the reef. Then to: 4 WSW of Anchorage Reef (11½ miles SSE), a shoal with a least depth of 3.6 m over. Then to: 5 Depending on draught WSW of Reliance Shoal (10 miles S), the shoal is rocky but the adjacent bottom is soft mud. Then to: 6 WSW of Rocky Islet (8½ miles SSE), then to: WSW of Elattur Cape (7 miles SSE), a low and rocky point of land with coconut palms close inland and several rocks lying close offshore. Then to: 7 WSW of Kadalur Point (4 miles WNW), a low point covered with coconut trees, over which can be seen a large round tree and Kadalur Point Lighthouse the point is reported to be radar conspicuous at 22 miles. The coastal reef, on which lies stranded wreck, extends up to 1½ miles from shore; the SW and W ends of this reef are known, respectively, as Kadalur Reef and Tikkodi Reef Close NW of the reef there is a shoal with a swept depth of 2.8 m which lies about 1¼ miles WSW of the village of Tikkodi. Then to: 8 Clear of Sacrifice Rock (10½ miles WNW) the channel between this rock and the mainland is free from dangers, but a vessel using it should pass at a safe distance from the rock, but not proceed into depths of less than 13 m. A vessel passing W of the rock at night should not proceed into depths of less than 27 m, which will be found about 2½ miles W of it. Then to a position WSW of Vatakara (12 miles NW). 9 Clear of a dangerous wreck (PA) lays 4 cables ENE of Sacrifice Rock. Useful marks 5.137 1 Calicut Lighthouse (white masonry tower, 15 m in height) (11°15'.51N, 75°46'.15E), stands near the Port Office. 2 West Hill (39 m high) (11°17'.39N, 75°46'.21E) is surmounted by a tank with an elevation of 49 m. The hill, with houses on it showing amongst the trees, provides a good landmark in the morning. 3 Calicut Port N boundary pillar (white, 9 m in height) (11°19'.25N, 75°44'.65E).Hill (11°33'.39N, 75°36'.58E); a prominent round red hill, 54 m high, stands on the S bank of the Murat River about 1 mile from its mouth.. 4 Kodakkad Kunnu (11°35'.77N, 75°37'.33E) 5 Tirumana (11°37'.73N, 75°37'.30E), a hill. CALICUT(KOZHIKODE) Chart 2053 General information 5.138 1 Calicut (11º 15' N, 075º 46' E), also known as Kozhikode, stands on the N bank of the Kallayi River near its mouth. 2 Calicut was the first port in India to be visited by Europeans when the Portuguese Vasco da Gama landed here in 1498. Now it is one of the largest city of the State of Kerala. 3 Function. No activity is undertaken at present by the port. The port had two piers which was used by lighters, however presently this two piers are destroyed and is nonoperational. 4 Port authority. The port is administered by the Port Officer, Beypore. Contact number: 0495-2414863 / 2414853, Email ID: pokozhikode.port@kerala.gov.in /portofficekkd@gmail.com. Tidal levels 5.139 1 Mean spring range about 1.0 m; mean neap range about 0.4 m. See information in Tide Tables. Anchorage 5.140 1 Anchorage may be obtained with Calicut Lighthouse bearing 078º at a distance according to vessels draught. Vessels should not anchor S of this bearing as the bottom is rocky. 2 There are three recommended anchorages shown on the chart. With local knowledge small vessels can anchor S and E of Coote Reef in depths of about 3 m, soft mud; the reef affords protection from NW. Puthiyappa Fishing Harbour 5.141 1 General information. Puthiyappa (11° 19’’ N 75° 44’’ E) is situated to the North of Kozhikode city, 3 Nm away. The natural bay at Puthiyappa is formed due to the protrusion of land into the sea. This protrusion offers natural protection to the mechanised fishing vessels from Northern side but it fails to provide protection from the waves approaching from South and West. However to offer protection to the fishing vessels throughout the year southern and western breakwaters are constructed. Facility 5.142 1 The port is having a wharf of 100 m. The NH-17 passes about 500m away from the harbour site. The nearest railway station is at Elathur, which is just 2 km from the harbour. Koyilandy Fishing Harbour 5.143 1 General information. Koyilandy Fishing Harbour (11°4’ N 75°9’ E) is located about 1 Km West of Koyilandy town. It is 8 mile North of Puthiyappa Fishery Harbour and 19 mile South of Chombal Fishery Harbour. The nearest railway station is ‘Koyilandy’ about 2km east of the harbor. Anchorage Chart 2003 Vatakara 5.144 1 General information. Vatakara (11º 34' N, 075º 35' E) lies about 2 miles NNW of the mouth of the Murat River. 2 Anchorage may be obtained abreast the town about 2¼ miles WSW of the above flagstaff in a depth of about 9m, mud. 3 Caution. Vessels approaching for anchoring from N, should keep well clear of a foul ground lies in position 11°35'.95N, 75°31'.85E. Wrecks and Obstructions 5.145 1 A PA wreck exists in position 11°33'.00 N 075°33'.90 E which is dangerous to surface navigation. Another wreck with depth above wreck 8.7 m lies about 2 cables WSW of it. Another wreck close to the coast South of Murat River exists in position 11°33'.71 N, 75°35'.33 E which is dangerous to surface navigation with a vertical clearance of .3 m. VATAKARA TO MOUNT DILLI General information Chart 219,218, 2058 Route 5.146 1 The route leads 32 miles NW from a position WSW of Vatakara to a position SW of Mount Dilli. Topography 5.147 1 The coastline is generally sandy and fringed with coconut palms except between Tellicherry (11°44'.90N, 75°29'.13E) and Cannanore (Kannur), 9 miles NW, where it is consist of sandy beaches and alternate cliffs. There are numerous above and below-water rocks, lying close offshore, in several places along this stretch of coastline. The coast is backed by undulating hills, with elevations from 30 to 120 m, which rise inland to the remarkable and lofty peaks of the Kundah Hills; many of the peaks are prominent and their positions are shown on the chart. Depths 5.148 1 Two dangerous wrecks lie seaward of the 30 m depth contour. One dangerous wreck in position 11°40'.06N, 75°23'.94E and another one in position 11°57'.82N, 75°13'.50E. Currents 5.149 1 The currents have a seasonal variation related to the monsoon, from February until September the most frequent set is SE with the greatest constancy during June to August; during October currents are variable in direction, thereafter from November until January the most common set is NW. The rate is mostly less than 1 kts but at times 2 kts may occur, usually during July, August and December. Exceptionally, the current has a significant onshore component. Principal marks 5.150 1 Landmarks. Vavul Mala (11°25'.66N, 76°07'.90E) Flat topped hill (11°36'.94N, 75°37'.79E). Tellicherry (Thalassery) south boundary pillar (11°42'.96N, 75°31'.04E). Flagstaff (11°44'.75N, 75°29'.53E). Club house (11°45'.72N, 75°28'.21E). Redoubt (ruined, 61 m in height) (11°46'.80N, 75°28'.20E), the ruins stands on a bare hill about 6 cables NE of Dharmadam. Casuarina Trees (11°50'.99N, 75°24'.19E), a clump of Casuarina trees stand on low hills 1¾ miles E of Fort Saint Angelo. Kannur Lighthouse (11°51'.63N, 75°21'.36E). North Point (11°54'.37N, 75°19'.15E), a headland. Kotte Kunnu lighthouse (Mount Dilli) (12°00'.43N, 75°12'.12E). 2 Major lights. Kadalur Point Lighthouse. Kannur Lighthouse. Kotte Kunnu lighthouse (Mount Dilli). 3 Racons & AIS. Kotte Kunnu lighthouse (Mount Dilli). Directions 5.151 1 The route leads about 32 miles NW from a position WSW of Vatakara (11°35'.76N, 75°34'.74E) to a position SW of Mount Dilli, passing: 2 Clear of a wreck with a swept depth of 10.3 m (11°35'.95N, 75°31'.85E). Then to: 3 SW of Chombakulu (11°39'.75N, 75°32'.55E), an islet lying about 6 cables offshore and fringed with several rocks. Then to: 4 SW of Kurchikallu Rock (11°42'.90N, 75°30'.50E), which lies about 7 cables SSE of Talayi Rock, the rocks have depths over them of 0.9 and 1.5 m respectively. A buoy (black, spherical) moored on the S side of Talayi Rock is removed during the SW monsoon. 5 Clear of a dangerous wreck (mast) (11°40'.06N, 75°23'.94E), position approximate. Then to: 6 SW of Nakudiankallu (11°45'.39N, 75°27'.81E), a drying rock which lies close NW of Bilikallu and Shorukallu basalt ridges. Then to: 7 SW of Green Island (21 m in height) (11°46'.20N, 75°27'.02E), an islet covered with tall trees which lies close off the W point of Dharmapattanam Island. Then to: 8 Clear of a dangerous wreck (11°54'.68N, 75°09'.23E) (position approximate), then to: 9 Clear of a dangerous wreck (11°57'.82N, 75°13'.50E), then to: 10 To a position SW of Mount Dilli (12°01'.70N, 75°12'.14E), which is the summit of a conspicuous headland that is separated by a narrow creek from the low-lying mainland. Kotte Kunnu lighthouse stands close to it. Useful marks 5.152 1 Mahe Lighthouse (white mast, masonry base, 13 m in height) (11°42'.13N, 75°31'.80E) 2 Thalassery lighthouse (disused) (white, squat, masonry tower) (11°44'.90N, 75°29'.15E)); it stands on the NW bastion of a fort which was built in 1708. 3 Chimney (43 m in height) (11°51'.60N, 75°21'.62E). 4 Azhikkal Light house (11°56'.54N, 75°18'.14E). Chombal Fishing Harbour 5.153 1 General information. Chombal (11° 37’ N 75° 30’) situated 6Nm North of Vatakara. A series of protruding rocks creates a partially tranquil area here. The fishing harbour is located in this area to take advantage of the natural chain of broken rocks by aligning the breakwaters along these protruding rocks. Thalai Fishing Harbour 5.154 1 General information. Thalai fishing harbour (11º43'.91N 75º30'.00 E). The harbour is 2 mile south of Thalassery town and very close to NH 17. Nearest railway station is at Thalassery, which is 3 km away from the site. TELLICHERRY (THALESSERY) Chart 2058 General information 5.155 1 Position. Tellicherry (Thalassery) ( 11º 45' N, 075º 29' E), is an open roadstead port situated 24 miles SE of Mount Dilli; the town of that name, backed by hills which are thickly covered with coconut palms and other trees, lies about 1 mile inland. 2 Function. No activity is undertaken at present by the port. 3 Port authority. The port is in charge of a Port Conservator, subordinate to the Port Officer at Beypore. Contact number: 0490-2320012. Email: portconservatorpotly@gmail.com. Tidal levels 5.156 1 Mean spring range about 1.0 m; mean neap range about 0.6 m. See information in Tide Tables. Anchorages 5.157 1 Anchorage for large vessels in unsettled weather is well offshore in depths of 12 m but in good weather a vessel can anchor in 9 m, soft mud, about 2 miles WSW of Nilot Point (11º 44' N, 75º 30' E), as shown on the chart. Small craft 5.158 1 Small craft can anchor NW of Thalai, a village situated 1½ miles SE of NilotPoint (11º44'N, 75º 30' E), vessels using this anchorage must pass S of Thalai Rock (11º 43' N, 75º 30' E), local knowledge is desirable. CANNANORE (KANNUR) Chart 2058 General information 5.159 1 Position. Cannanore (Kannur) port (11º 51' N, 75º 23' E) is an open roadstead port located in Mopla Bay 9 miles NW of Tellicherry, This is a natural bay with about 1.2 km width and maximum water depth of about 3m. The northern side of the bay consists of a narrow laterite formation and southern side is a long beach protected with few groynes. Fort St. Angelo, a historical monument is situated on the northern side of the bay. 2 Topography. The old town of Kannur which lies N of Mopla Bay is almost hidden by coconut trees 3 Function. No activity is undertaken at present by the port. 4 Port authority. The port is in charge of a Port Conservator, subordinate to the Port Officer at Beypore. Contact number: 0497-2731866. Tidal levels 5.161 1 Mean spring range about 1.0 m; mean neap range about 0.4 m. See information in Tide Tables. Useful mark. 5.162 1 The flagstaff on Fort Saint Angelo Tower (24 m in height) (11º 51'.0 N, 75º 22'.5 E). The fort is an old Portuguese fort standing on a low rocky point at the S end of the town. Anchorage 5.163 1 Anchorage can be obtained in about 9.1m, mud, good holding ground, about 1¾ mile SSW of Fort Saint Angelo. Landing 5.164 1 Landing can be effected in a small bight ENE of Fort Saint Angelo at the N end of Mopla Bay; ships' boats should use the beach fronting the Port and Customs office, thus avoiding the rocks awash in the E part of the bay. 2 In fine weather the steps on the E side of the rocky point close E of Fort Saint Angelo may be used. 3 A heavy swell, when the SW monsoon blows strongly, makes landing impracticable. AZHIKKAL Chart 2025, 2118 General Information 5.165 1 Position. The Port of Azhikkal (11°56'.51N, 75°18'.51E), a minor port, lies on the S bank of Valapattanam River about 1½ miles within its entrance, it is not visible from seaward. 2 Function. The principle trade is export and import of timber and building materials. The port is used by local fishing vessels and mechanized vessels also. 3 Port limits. Boundary pillars, defining the N and S limits of the port, stand on the coast 1¼ miles NW and7 cables SE of the river mouth; the W limit is about 7 miles seaward of the coast as shown on the chart. 4 Port authority. The maximum permissible draught and length in the port is 3 m and 100 m respectively. Harbour Information 5.167 1 Berth. A wharf, 260 m long, is available for cargo operations. A fishing harbour of around 275 mtrs is also constructed on the other side of the river. 2 Pilotage. Local unlicensed pilots are available upon request on VHF MMB Radio. Tugs are available. 3 Major light. Azhikkal Light house (White round masonry tower, black bands, 27 m in height) (11°56'.52N, 75°18'.12E). 4 Useful marks. The entrance to Valapattanam River is distinctly marked by two breakwaters. Directions 5.168 1 Approach and entry. Vessels, approaching the port, should give a wide berth to the dangerous wreck at position 11°57'.82N, 75°13'.50E, 4¾ miles WNW of Azhikkal Lighthouse. 2 From the fairway buoy (11°55'.99N, 75°17'.25E) a channel is well marked with buoys for entering Valapattanam River. The channel over the bar at the entrance is shallow, which is subject to seasonal change, there are numerous shoal patches near the river mouth and passage across the bar should not be attempted without a local pilot. 3 Close within the entrance, Talipparamba River joins from the N, the confluence of the two rivers forms a sandy bar with a least depth of 1.8 m. 4 Regular ferry service operates from ferry jetty across the channel. Anchorage 5.169 1 The port has an open roadstead anchorage, which gives minimum shelter from swell and waves. Vessel are recommended to anchor in 10 m, sand and mud, good holding ground, about 2½ miles WSW of the entrance to Valapattanam River as shown on the chart. Other facilities 5.170 1 Facilities. Hospital; local divers, mobile cranes. 2 Supplies. Limited quantities of fresh water; fuel and provisions, electricity. 3 Repairs. Local workshop. 4 Communications. Port maintains watch on VHF MMB Ch 16 from 1000 – 1700 hrs on all working days. 5 Transportation. Kozhikode. The port is well connected by road and railways to other part of the country. Chart 218 Mahe 5.171 1 General information. Mahe lies on the S side of the entrance to Mahe River (11º 42' N, 75º 32' E). Formerly, this was a French settlement. Some old forts and houses lie on the detached hills behind the Mahe. 2 Function. The principle exports are coconuts, pepper and dried figs. All descriptions of small commodities are imported. 3 Directions. The harbour is approached between rocks extending offshore from both sides of the river entrance to the 4 m depth contour. It is considered good for small vessels, but the local knowledge is desirable. During the dry season, November to March, the channel leading into the river lies close to the rocks on the S side of the entrance and has a depth of 0.6 m; the sea does not break over these rocks. The bar is considered dangerous except when the sea is very smooth. 4 Kallayi, a small local trading port, with a customs house, lies close upstream of a bridge spanning Mahe River about 2½ cables from its entrance. 5 Transportation. Road and railways. Mount Dilli 5.172 1 Anchorage, with moderate shelter from NW winds, can be obtained in 7m, mud, with the summit of Mount Dilli bearing 330°, 1½ mile. 2 Small vessels may find shelter off the mouth of the creek, SE of Mount Dilli, during the NW winds which prevail here from February to May, in depths of about 4m. A short confused sea and slight S-going set will be found here. 3 Caution. Vessels approaching the anchorages from S should give the dangerous wreck lying 3 miles SSE of Mount Dilli a wide berth. Small Craft Rivers 5.173 1 Dharmadam River entrance lies 4¼ miles E of Green Island (11º 46' N, 75º 28' E), it is known locally as Dharmadam Puzha; the entrance is used by sailing craft to lay up for repairs or for shelter in bad weather. 2 Anjarakandi River entrance lies about 5 cables NNE of Green Island (11º 46' N, 75º 27' E), it is obstructed by a sandbank over which the sea always breaks. 3 Both rivers, which join N of Dharmadam Island, are navigable only by small craft with local knowledge. MOUNT DILLI TO KASARAGOD General information Chart 218 Route 5.174 1 The route leads about 32 miles NNW from a position SW of Mount Dilli (12°01'.70N, 75°12'.14E) to a position WSW of Kasargod (12°29'.80N, 74°59'.50E). Topography 5.175 1 The Coast fringed with coconut trees are broken in several places by the mouth of a river or a prominent headland. Kavvayi Backwater, lying close within the coast, extends from a position abreast the NW slopes of Mount Dilli NNW for about 11 miles to the confluence of Ariakaduva and Nileswaram Rivers. Depths 5.176 1 Except a dangerous wreck in position 12°29'.36N, 74°53'.41E, there are no charted dangers seawards up to 30 m depth contour in this section. Principal marks 5.177 1 Landmarks: Kotte Kunnu lighthouse (12°00'.43N, 75°12'.11E) Wreck (12°01'.92N, 75°11'.13E), which stranded in 1979. Hosdrug Fort (ruined, 37 m in height) (12°18'.60N, 75°05'.60E). Bekal Fort (36 m in height) (12°23'.50N, 75°00'.02E), an old fort with a tall central bastion. Palm Clump (46 m in height) (12°26'.98N, 75°00'.17E). Chimney (46 m in height) (12°29'.21N, 74°59'.30E). 2 Major Lights: Kotte Kunnu Lighthouse Kasaragod Lighthouse (white 8-sided masonry tower,black bands, 30 m in height) (12°30'.32N, 74°58'.39E). Passage 5.179 1 The route leads about 32 miles NNW from a position SW of Mount Dilli (12°01'.70N, 75°12'.14E) (5.175) to a position WSW of Kasargod (12°29'.80N, 74°59'.50E), passing: 2 Clear of a dangerous wreck (depth 9.5 m) (12°29'.36N, 74°53'.41E). Useful marks 5.180 1 Hosdrug Fort (ruined, 37 m in height) (12°18'.60 N, 75°05'.60 E). 2 Manjampadi (12°20'.37 N, 75°07'06 E), a bare hill. 3 Bekal Fort (12°23'.50 N, 75°00'.02 E) . Fishing Harbours and Anchorages Cheruvathoor Fishing Harbour 5.181 1 General information. Cheruvathoor (11o12' N and longitude is 75o07' E.) is one of the important fishing centres in Kasargod District of Kerala State, with extensive fishing activity involving mechanized trawlers and motorized crafts. The area is located at about 1 mile west of Cheruvathoor town. In this harbor a quay of 120 is protected by two breakwaters. Bekal 5.182 1 General information. Bekal (12°23'.57N, 75°02'.00E) is a small open port for local craft formed by a rocky promontory, which may be identified by a rest house situated at its foot. 2 Caution. A rocky area (1 m in height) lies about 1½ miles NE of Bekal Fort. Chart 2025 Kasaragod 5.183 1 General information. Kasaragod (12°29'.80N, 74°59'.50E), a small town lies on the N side of the entrance to the Chandragiri River. No activity is undertaken presently by the port. 2 Port Authority. See more information in Indian Tide Tables. 4 Port limits. Near the mouth of Chandragiri River, two posts each of 6 m in height and surmounted by a white ball are erected periodically, they serve to mark the N and S limits of the port. During the SW monsoon these posts are removed. 5 Landmarks: Kasaragod Light Chimney Fort (ruined, 41 m in height) (12°28'.20N, 74°00'.19E). 6 Major lights. Kasaragod Light. 7 Anchorage may be found in a depth of about 10 m, soft mud, with Kasaragod lighthouse bearing 022°, distant 2¼ mile, as shown on the chart. Kasaragod Fishing Harbour 5.184 1 General information. Kasaragod Fishing Harbour is on the estuary of Chandragiri River and the backwaters, which is about 1Nm from the Kasargod town. The harbor is a newly constructed one which is protected by two breakwaters. Small Craft Rivers 5.185 1 Turutti River (12°12'.05 N, 75°07'.22 E), the entrance to the Ariakaduva & Nileswaram Rivers and Kavvayi Backwater, is navigable only by small craft with local knowledge. 2 Chandragiri River passes S of the town of Kasaragod and enters the sea between the two hill forts at Chandragiri (12°27.89' N, 74°59'.74 E) and Kasaragod 1½ miles NNW. The river bar dries and is very changeable; it can only be crossed by small craft during high water.
