TIDES AND TIDAL STREAMS

It has been reported that the tidal streams at choke
points along the Khawr ’Abd Allah and Khawr Shityanah,
as far as Umm Qasr, reach up to 6 knots. Extreme care
should be taken when in the area at lower low water; the
tidal height has been reported to be one metre less than
expected. In addition, a north-westerly wind can lower
the height of tide by up to 0·2m and delay high and low
water by about 30 minutes; a south-easterly wind will
have the opposite effect.
